Not to mention that you have been able to buy the Chinese version and flash it with CM11 yourself for the last 3-4 months.
This. Plus if you are on XDA, there's a thread where you put in your name and email address and one of the buyers sends you a invite. (This was back when invite was the only way to get them).

That's definitely an original scam strategy.
I think it is a brilliant business strategy of ONEPLUS ONE. Have a product and limit sales of it. Marketing genius.
Nothing outstanding about the strategy. It's the basic demand and supply curve. Imo, it's just another Chinese Android phone with bigger budget for their Marketing department. There's nothing wrong with the Chinese phones, but the marketing aspect created the hype which is now trying to justify an increased pricetag compared to Xiaomi or Huawei etc.
Waiting on my Redmi 1S to be delivered as a back up phone soon. Gave my backup Huwai Honor 4G to a friend last month, loved that phone.
I would have bought one when I receive the invitations about 1-2 months ago but alas, they don't ship to Australia. Not going to get one now as the wow factor have passed.
