Buying an SSD While in Hong Kong Safe?

My mother is returning from a holiday and is currently in Hong Kong.
I was thinking of getting her to buy my an SSD for my new PC but wondered if it's a risky purchase?
Would it be cheaper and if so is she likely to return with a counterfeit product?

I don't think the risks of counterfeit are higher than using a cheap supplier here (that is, quite low) for an SSD, but I would be surprised if it was sufficiently cheaper to be worth the bother. The prices we get for computer parts these days are pretty globally competitive for commodity items like drives, so all you might expect to save is GST. And with the AUD down 5% in the last few weeks, stock bought here will likely be priced based on the cost with the higher dollar, while something bought now in HK will have to be priced at current exchange rates.

Finally, I wouldn't trust my mum to buy an SSD at JB hi-fi where I could return a mix u tomorrow, let alone another country ;-)

Tell her to bring back a couple of the little milk bottles Kowloon Dairy sell instead. They make cool desktop pencil holders for your hipster friends!

  • Indeed if you just ask your mum to explore Sham Shui Po buying a product that she might not be familiar with, you might actually pay higher price than buying here. Quite a few not-so-honest shops there.
