Hi Ozbargainers,
I was wondering what job seeking sites do you use?
I've been using Gumtree, Seek.com and airtasker

I don't know why this is negged. Applying through an agency is the best way to find many white collar positions.
Op, what kind of job are you looking for? Do you have prior experience in the field?
I used to work in Finance at one of the huge ones; at induction they said the difference between themselves and the welfare oriented services is that "we look for people for jobs, not the other way around." I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people haven't had great experiences with agencies hence the negs. They don't care about candidates they care about their sales - generally speaking the more marketable you are the better your experience will be, and it depends on luck because there are some really great and really shonky consultants out there.
A few observations from my experiences with them and with being on the other side of the job seeking fence:
It's always a mystery client because often they don't have exclusivity on the job placement. If you're say working with more than one agency and you let another agency know about the opening, they can potentially lose a sale.
Sometimes they'll keep a job ad open even after it has been filled just to trawl for more candidates. My experience dealing with ones like this ended up being a massive time waster.
Don't rely on one agency (or one single avenue of job searching)
The whole industry is relationships based. I agree direct apply cuts out a lot of the crap. But say an agency places you in a company. More often than not when you need staff (if you've been placed at management level or worked your way up) you'll normally give the agency who placed you the first opportunity.
Some employers go through agencies to save time screening candidates themselves. I did a direct posting through SEEK for a junior finance role and had to shut the ad down after about 4 days and 700 odd applications. This is where you need a clear concise resume - anything that looked like an essay or spelling / grammar mistakes on page one got binned immediately. Some were clearly not qualified and looked like they were trying to fill up their job search diaries for welfare. To all I wrote a boiler plate reply to thanking them for their interest etc etc, it just sucks when you just don't hear anything back at all. Of the ones I interviewed some had clearly misrepresented their experience and couldn't answer basic technical questions. In short good to get pre-screened candidates from agents.
I was speaking with my agent last week for a catch up, he said for white collar finance there's a fair bit of strength in the temp to perm market at the moment ie employers trying before they buy. Don't turn your nose up at contracts, they can lead to great opportunities.
TLDR Agencies can be good and have connections to a lot of great jobs, just don't be under any illusion they're doing it to help you and don't rely on them solely in your job search. Contract roles worth a look into.
indeed.com uses basically all the sites, and I like it's layout.
the collation sometimes is pretty poor but it does allow search more obscure sites that most people don't know of.
If you are looking for a white collar job, Linkedin is pretty essential these days.
Even if you apply via an agency or website it will be the first place people go to look at you.

tends to be a really good one that does not get a lot of exposure
Thanks for the link.
This is what job seeking should feel like. I instantly know where the job is and who it's for. There's no need for me to apply for a mysterious position with a "blue-chip client" or "boutique industry leader" where the location is only revealed if you make it to the second round. If I wanted to go on a Japanese game show I'd go on a Japanese game show.
Every careers advisor tells you to find out more about the company before writing your cover letter but this is getting nearly impossible nowadays. Every HR company is now telling me to send in my updated resume with every job application - even for casual labouring roles. If I could carry 20 kg from A-to-B year after year until I stopped 6 months ago I don't think my "updated" resume would reveal a secret loss of strength or dexterity.
yes applydirect revealed a few secrets alright….was wondering where some of the jobs had disappeared to.
at least with applydirect you dont have to deal with mercenaries / people gambling with other peoples livelyhoods.
