Google Is Offering Me a Replacement Nexus 4 for Power Button Issues

I was having some issues with my Nexus 4 power button lately and contacted Google. It takes several press on the power button to awake the phone up, sometimes it unlocks and locks again by a single press, and sometimes it works perfectly okay! In short, the power button is working but not properly. So I looked up my warranty details and saw just few days remaining (purchased first week of october, 2013). After few email exchanges and a phone call from Google, here is what they are offering -

So guys, should I go for this refurbished Nexus 4? I really like my Nexus 4, apart from the power button issue, I don't wanna change it for a refurbished unit. What do you suggest?

Also, would they charge me if they deem the problem with the returned unit was minor?

refurbished is like a new phone.

    • And is going to be as good as or better than your existing used phone!
Unless you only unboxed your phone yesterday!

If you are like a number of fanatical android users here who think refurbished Apple products are a con, then reject this otherwise you are being hypocritical.

If you have been reading their dribble then you are probably concerned with Google doing the same.

If you ignore the crap that they have been espousing and think logically then you will consider the following.

    1. Your button issue will NOT get better
    2. Leaving it alone, will mean you will have to fix it at your cost.
    3. Fixing it will mean having your unit opened up by someone. A Nexus authorised repairer will cost you a lot more than some backyard repairer, while one will probably better than the other, it's still going to be a "refurbished" unit, the same as what your are trying to avoid.
    4. Your phone is a year old, the refurbished one will be younger and less used.
    5. Many refurbished units are those returned early in their life, or buyer remorse units and if Apple is to go by, even have new batteries. Screens and other marked or damaged item's are replaced.

I do question, your warranty being only 1 year. (bought Oct 2013). Apple was also rightly blasted by the Android users for initially only having 1 year warranty and now it's 2. By that Google MUST also have a 2 year warranty, otherwise why would the fandroids ever have raised this issue.

Which BTW was GOOD to raise as it helps both types of users.

    So in summary

    Go for it….

    • The button is not completely broken, sometimes it works and sometimes plays up. You are right that its not going to get any better…

Nexus devices cost half of a parallelly released iPhone. Google or the OEM partner, nobody makes money on it. So in my book 1 year of warranty is good for nexus series.

Please try to keep this within my issue, we don't want any iOS vs Android flame war, do we? :)

Its ozbargain, if its fair for others in other threads surely they can cope with some payback unless they have no sense of humour… LOL

  • Exact same issue happened to a guy I work with, power button had problems.

It was replaced with a Nexus 5 - no questions, no cost.

    • They replaced his nexus 4 with a nexus 5? why would they do that? o.O

      • So they still make Nexus 4?

        • No stock, and easier for Google I believe.

I would try your luck with the refurb.

        • Edit: NVM

    • Sounds like a common problem for Nexus 4?

After reading your suggestions, I have ordered the replacement.

I was hoping for a minor repair offered by Google within australia, which may take 1 week max. So I was overwhelmed by their replacement offer, albeit with a refurbished one.

I just hope they don't bill me for minor fault (don't fall under warranty).

  • Update: Received the replacement on 29/09 and TNT picked up the RMA today.

The replacement is a refurbished, mfg date - March 2013.
