Cheapest/best car insurance?

I'm looking to get comprehensive insurance on a new car (Ford Fiesta). Does anyone know of any good deals/websites/promo codes going at the moment?? It's been a while since I've shopped around for car insurance and I'm getting a bit bogged down in my research!

Many thanks in advance ….

  • Hi,

I signed up with Youi www.youi.com you can get a cheaper price than what they are offering on the website by going through the quote process, then at the end where you would normally pay save your quote saying that you'll come back to it later.

You should then receive a call from a youi consultant offering you a better price than what the website gave you.. this should be better than most other comprehensive insurers.

    Good luck :)

  • great tip … thanks!

  • You can get big discount if family/friend is a long time customer. I was quoted the rate for a rating 3 customer in my first year of buying car insurance because one of my family is rating one with AAMI. Without that connection, I think I would have been started on rating 10/11.

  • +1

Cheapest is not always the best option… I would suggest you research the quality of service for the insurer you go with.

I was with AAMI long enough to get their max no claim bonus and when I actually needed to make a claim I discovered how horrible their service is.

Not sure if it was the centre I went to (Norwest, NSW), but their reps are useless and the repairers they use did a terrible job. After complaining, they sent me to a second repairer to fix the first repairers stuff ups… the car still had a couple of minor issues and the b*stards stole one of my CDs!

I'm currently with NRMA now (costing ~$100 more), haven't had to claim yet so can't rate their service quality, but at least they let you choose your repairer.

  • thanks … I've got a quote from AAMI and they want to charge approx $150 more than the quote I got online from www.youi.com.au (recommended above) … they offered us Rating 1 for life on this, but if it costs more, what's the point?! My folks have been with the RACV forever, so might check if they'll give us a discounted rate …

  • Good point re: the quality of service. I've never had to make a claim with you so cannot comment on their service.

I have had almost exactly the same issues with AAMI - we had a car that should have been written off (we were side swiped), instead they decided to repair most of the items, had to take it back twice. At the time I would have gladly paid an extra $100 for decent service.

Rating 1 stuff is a joke if it's not saving you anything, it's just a tactic to keep you with that Company.

Please note: Youi currently only insures persons who have access to an online facility, a valid e-mail address and cars located in either QLD,NSW,VIC or ACT.
@youi, Not sure how cheap they are as I can't check coz SA not included.

    Try http://virginmoney.com.au/car-insurance/

If in SA try RAA they give good discount if you're a member + additional discount for multi policy.

RAA Online savings for any new policy:
    * $20 Off Comprehensive Motor Vehicle Insurance
    * $10 Off Home Insurance
    * $10 Off Contents Insurance
    * $5 Off Any Other Insurance (excluding Travel Insurance)

  • thanks for the comments guys …. still searching, but have until the end of the month and still waiting for my youi.com.au callback! We're in VIC so will check out the RACV … and virginmoney … didn't know they did car insurance … but then not surprised!

  • I saw on TV that Coles has just entered the insurance market. Check out http://www.coles-insurance.com.au/Car-Insurance.aspx

    • Coles Insurance is currently available in Tasmania only

  • If they don't call you back just call them and tell them a friend was offered a better deal by a youi consultant over the phone :)

  • Had a couple claims through Suncorp. First time they used one of their "preferred" insurers and it was garbage service. Had to go back to get it fixed properly. The second time I told them I wanted to go to a specific repairer (as I had recommendations via a car club member as to the quality of the work, and due to a fancy paint colour, their experience was valued) they said fine, and I got the job done there quite happily. The lesson is not to just go with their preferred repairer if you are aware of a better place out there.

Also, a solicitor I know in the personal injury/liability business told me that as far as customer service and speed and likelihood of a straighforward injury claim process, Suncorp are the best. Personal experience says RACQ is … well I won't swear, but they suck.

I tried Youi but their online application said my suburb wasn't covered. And that's Brisbane metro southside… LAME!

    • Hi AntMan76,

Did they readily listen when you told them that the work done on your car by their repair man was no good? How did you prove that to them?

      • Hi Raz,

        Sorry for the mega-late reply.

The insurer told me to take it back to the repair shop, which I did. The manager took a look at it and agreed it was a shit job.

  • I would say GIO….they were the cheapest, esp if you have a drive runder 25. Admittedly I haven't had to make any claims yet. But they were significantly cheaper (comprehensive insurance) than other brands (ESP AAMI).

  • Think I'm going to sit down for a couple of hours tomorrow and do the ring around… I know they're usually cheaper online … but need to nut out a couple of things with a real person and then will get the cheapest to match their online rate. Will give an update then …thanks to you all for all the suggestions!

  • i have a cover with real insurance, cost a lot less than my previous NRMA

  • youi. by a long way. saved hundreds both on my commercial and private cars.

  • RandomNinja hit the nail on the head - you get what you pay for. Currently I'm with www.bingle.com.au and they're the cheapest around even when compared to YOUI and AAMI(although ironically Bingle is underwritten by AAMI). They don't offer a lot of the other 'perks' which other insurers offer (which you are effectively paying for) but then it comes down to your own insurance needs. How about combining your car insurance with household and even life insurance with a single insurer to gain a discount if that's an option? Shop around online as each insurer will also have a slightly different risk profile depending on the car you're driving.

  • All this talk about car insurance and no-one's mentioned justcarinsurance, as the name suggests, yep you guessed it all they insure is just cars!!!

    • was overpriced last time i checked. Was $100 more expensive than AAMI and had a $6000 excess, compared with our current plan with AAMI that is $1k excess.

  • try http://www.zippy.com.au
They'll try and find you the cheapest insurance. I switched from AAMI to CGU and saved $500

  • AAMI are dodgy when it comes to claims

    go with Allianz

  • May I just suggest, go for the cheapest insurance company that allow you choose your own repairer. By doing so, which insurance company is the best is no longer important. Perhaps it will be more expensive comparatively. But you have no idea how MUCH potential trouble there will be if your car is fixed by some insurance associated workshop….

Don't just try to save a couple of hundred now and waste a lot your valuable time & risk your car's value in the future. Let me put it this way, the price difference between two panel shop for the same job can vary from $100 to $1000+. I don't think the more expensive one is only there to rip you. Some of them are prestige repairer which are specialised in servicing/repair Ferrari/Lambo. Whereas the cheaper one can be your local dodgy shop which might use second parts (when they shouldn't) or unmatch paint. Just imaging your insurance only allow you to go to that dodgy one. Not saying they will definitely do it, but why take the chance?

  • Sorry for the late reply … but we have only just received the car and have now finalised insurance.

After getting quotes from all listed in this post (thankyou everyone!), Youi were the cheapest by over $100 (after negotiating a discount at the 11th hour). They have their own designated repairers and guarantee repairs made through them, BUT you can also choose any other repairer… they just won't guarantee their repairs. We had to take the car to a Kmart Tyre and Auto for a vehicle inspection, which was a bit out of the norm … but understandable from an insurers point of view.

Obviously, everyone's circumstances are different and what might work out cheaper for me might not work out cheaper you. Their customer service was excellent however, and they don't worry about Ratings like most other insurers. We had a covernote from AAMI which guaranteed Rating 1 for life and Youi have matched this, putting our cover down as Rating 1 also. Previously I had no rating, so if we change insurers in the future, this will be good to take with us.

They also emailed advising that they do Home insurance …. so will probably switch to them when ours is up for renewal……

  • http://www.progressivedirect.com.au have just launched a couple of months ago and are quite competitive.

    • I just renewed my insurance with Youi, using a quote from progressive to get a cheaper price :)

Progressive was about $100 cheaper for market value, or about $20 cheaper with car hire after accident vs Youi without car hire.

The reason I went with Youi was for the choice of agreed value, and after negotiating it ended up being only $50 more.

  • If your in Queensland, try RACQ www.racq.com.au they are pretty good priced. You also get discount if you have multiple policy and you also get a discount based on your roadside level (eg. Silver, Bronze etc) and also a discount on your roadside renewal as well.

  • i have heard good things from youi

  • I have had lots of troubles with Youi. Go with RACQ!
