I Bought a Grill but It Has a US Power Plug, need to use it on AU socket

Hey, I just bought this grill from amazon. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CMQSZ0W/ref=oh_aui_detaiā€¦

I didn't realize it has a US power plug. What do I need for this to work on the AU sockets? Will it need a voltage converter or can I simply use an adaptor? thanks :)

does it have a wall plug power adapter or laptop style adapter with a brick in the cord? if so, it depends on what the power plug that it came with says for 'input voltage'. if the imput voltage is 110-220v AC or 110-240v AC, you can get away with just a plug pin adapter (or swapping the cord from brick to wall if it's laptop style).

if it says input 110v AC, then you'll need a voltage converter.

if the grill just has a cord direct to the wall with no power brick or wall plug power block thing, then you'll need to check the specs of the grill itself. Should be up the back of the manual. again, 110-240v means it's smart enough to work in both australia/europe and the USA without issues and you'll just need a plug pin adapter. If it says 110v only then it'll need a voltage converter.

    • Its just a cable from the machine straight to the wall. If read over the manual and box and is says nothing about voltage, which is a bit weird. I've checked out the larger model which is 4 serving size and it states "Signature Foreman heating element distributes heat evenly, works on 110/120 voltage"

So I guess this one would be the same.

Look on the actual device OP..
And while you're there look for the Wattage, cause that's how big (minimum) you're going to need the Inverter to be capable of outputting.
For safety reasons, You should look to get at least 20% more wattage output from the inverter.

Likely you'll spend more on the inverter than on the device itself.
        Lesson learned?

        • 120v~70hz, 760 watts. Any idea of where to buy one?

        • @Wagzy:
That sounds incredibly low for a Grill!
I'm not sure it's even worth bothering with. Have you used one before? 760 Watts isn't going to produce much heat..
You'd really only be wanting to maybe toast a sandwich (slowly).
I was expecting at least 1500W, and ideally 2000+.

        • @scubacoles:

I havn't used before but it's only the size of a small 2 sandwich breville. I checked my actual sandwich breville and it produces 750 watts. So that's fine with me, it's only need to grill chicken and veggies etc, no steak or anything.

Though I checked out the price for voltage converters and it's probably not worth getting one.

  • I would just return it……

On the Amazon webpage, it says

'Product Built to North American Electrical Standards
Unless otherwise indicated, this product is manufactured for North American electrical standards and is intended for use in the United States and Canada.'

    As Scubacoles says lesson learnt…..

    • Ah fair enough lol. It was bought as it isn't available in Australia(Well I havn't found any small compact George Foreman Grills) Ah well.

  • Well, it will cook your stuff 4 times as fast. :)

    Return it.

    • Haha, wouldn't that be wonderful.

Eh it didn't cost much, so I couldn't be bothered returning it.

      • Take it as a gift for a local on your next trip to Japan or Taiwan. :)

  • Buy a voltage converter or transformer from ebay.
