Winter Clothes

Friends going to Japan this December. How many layers of clothing needed and best place to buy them now here in Australia?

I could be wrong here (I've never been to Japan, but know plenty of people who have) - but wouldn't you buy all that stuff in Japan? Ie. just take a few essentials with you to survive til your shopping trip, and stock up for the holiday over there.

Aren't clothes way cheaper over there? And better?

My mother just came back from there not long ago. She went nuts about Uniqlo and was so disappointed by how much more expensive it is over here. Seems a decent place to get basics from. Jackets she bought over there were half the price they are over here! Crazy.

It's not too bad though this may vary where you go. I usually just wore jeans or thick stocking + shorts for bottoms, and a tee, knit (thickness depending on coldness in the morning), a winter coat and a scarf for my upper body. I hate when the wind gets under my clothes at my neck so defs would take a chunky scarf. Sometimes I wore gloves but I prefer shoving my hands in my coat pockets.

  • I agree about getting a decent scarf, I wouldn't be caught dead in a scarf here, but over there I proudly wrapped it around my neck and flicked it over my shoulder! Buy it over there cheap.

I really like the cold, when I went out in real cold winter days or nights in Japan I would usually wear a singlet+t-shirt+hoody(add a jacket that kept the wind/moisture out if it was snowing or raining). Thick socks, jeans, sometimes shorts if I could get away with it.

If they are going for shopping and not strictly sight-seeing I'd try and buy some of the clothes there, it'll be cool, probably cheaper and no one here is gonna have the same stuff. If they are big people I wouldn't rely on finding appropriate sized clothes in Japan, Sakazen will be the best bet for big/tall clothes, they have very fashionable big man stuff but it's not cheap.

  • stock up at Uniqlo in Japan. It's cheaper over there than here and great quality. Note- it's really hot indoors and you will be taking all the layers when you get indoors.

As Grillman said, if you're bigger sized, then stock up here. Kathmandu Outlets or General clothing outlets should be stocking all the Winter stuff now so you can pick them up at a good price.
