How would you feel?

Just a quick question.

Say you have won a competition and the value of the prize was approx. $1000

Once you receive the prize, you find out the value of the prize is 50% of the advertised value.

How would you feel?

Edit: Some have mentioned inflated RRPs and you can always find it cheaper elsewhere. Prize is a ticket to a once off event only sold by one vendor. Not available elsewhere or for less money unless someone is planning to make a loss.

I'd suggest you just shoot them a polite letter/email. Maybe its a mistake?

Companies need to get permits to run lucky draw competitions so I'd assume if they violate their T&Cs that wouldn't be looked at too highly by the govt bodies.

    • Thanks Neil, sent an email but received a very generic response that implied that the other 50% was used to ensure the prize was available.

Wont go too much into it as I am grateful to win the prize, just wanted to hear others opinions.

…Huh? "ensure prize was available"? What does that mean?

  • What was the prize/value?

    • +1

      Close to $1000

  • I think it would depend on whether they nominated the prize at the start, and it was overvalued. Or if they substituted something of lessor value, eg the said one type of TV and gave you another.

Was entry free? - I would tend to be more chill if that's the case. But if it was money raising like a raffle, well 50% is a pretty big difference!

    • Prize was outlined at the start and the value associated. Prize was delivered but value was less than what was advertised.

      Free entry and random draw.

Depends, if for example it was advertised as $1000 MYER gift voucher but was sent a $500 one I would be annoyed.
If it were a BBQ listed as 'valued at $1000' and I got the correct BBQ but realised you can commonly find them for $500 (or could only sell on eBay for $500) then I would be fine.

^ This and v that. Generally if the prize has a fixed value then your scenario would be completely out of order.
If it is a good which has a somewhat variable value then I expect the competition value to be at the upper end.
However, given your post below that the item only has one vendor and a fixed price I would have to ask how you understood that the value was double its normal price?
This post really needs some more details.

Prize values are always inflated… usually rrp plus a bit more.
If you win something then you can guarantee it is being sold somewhere for much less than they quote on the competition blurb.
It has always been that way… nothing new, move on…

    • This prize is only sold by one vendor at a fixed price.

I would have to go with the sucking it up, I can't think of any competition where the RRP has been realistic.

    Not right, but normal…

$100 is a lot of candy if that make you feel better. .You almost lost me to that option.

  • Just to be clear, I am not complaining about this, I am very happy to have won the prize!

I mentioned it to a few mates and they suggested they would be annoyed. I didnt think too much of it but thought I would hear how other people would react.

Will update OP as well to make this clear.

    • still depends, its a ticket to an event, is it premium seats? like front row, VIP only?
      is the event sold out?
can you only get those seats from this competition, making them worth more

did people have to camp out to get tickets like your?

  • Sorry Forkus.

I was talking about the "sucking up" in general poll options/candy post. Too subtle for Monday Morning. Very bad pun :(

You reminded me of a completion Qantas is running for a RIO DVD. RRP. Is $39.95 - I reckon it's actually about $20!

    • Haha all good, good reminder I need another coffee anyway!

  • This has happened to me a few times one was a soccer table thing (valued by promoter as $1000 I got $100 on ebay for it and a handbag RRP $750 I got $70 for it on ebay). Both times I was happy enough as they were items I had no use for and someone else was happy they got a bargain. I also 'won' festival concert tickets last year but it turned out you had to spend $20 to actually use them. I hate prizes that end up costing you more money just to use them. Ended up giving them to a friend.
