2.5inch internal hard drive

A friend of mine recently bought a second hand laptop from the police auctions sans hard drive. He asked me to find him a cheap hard drive with either 80gb or 120gb capacity.

I searched google and staticICE and pretty much the only thing i could find was:

Samsung 160GB 2.5" SATA 8MB 5400rpm Hard Drive $80 delivered

2.5" Laptop Hard Drives Seagate 2.5" laptop SATA 120GB HDD 5400rpm, 8MB buffer for $60 i couldn't find the cost of delivery anywhere on the site.

To be honest i don't know much about internal hard drive prices so any help is greatly appreciated.

  • Work out what it is, SATA, or IDE… then just hit up the search on here and find the best deal. You won't find a good price 80GB hard drive, you'll probably get a 120GB for less price…

so yeah, you need sata or ide 2.5" drive. Installing it is very easy, all you do is unscrew the side, and place it in the slot. then install an os

  • Thanks for the replies. I didn't even think to check msy or whether it was ide or sata. I'm thinking it's ide cause its a hp pavilion dv5000 with the old hp design not the current one.

  • yeah, shine a torch in the side and look at the pins. see what you can do :) gl

  • So i unscrewed the enclosure on the laptop where the hard drive is supposed to go and i tried to fit in an old samsung ide drive i had only to find it doesn't fit so im thinking most likely it is Sata and not Ide.

Edit: was looking at http://www.laptopparts101.com/hard-drive/ and i can safely say that the one on the right does not fit in. Lucky for me there is an msy nearby so i think I'll just pop in and grab one of the above hard drives.

    Thanks for all your help.

    • yeah dude, just grab one from MSY. look at the specials before you drop down, have a list of backups (they often don't stock what they advertise)

      • thanks for the info ill make sure to do that

  • Msy are pathetic. Not only did the two stores closest to me not stock any 2.5" hard drives but they couldn't even tell me if any of the other locations had any in stock as they don't have a central database which is in this day and age is a joke.

Edit: Was checking out dailygizmo site when i came across this: Seagate Momentus 5400.6 2.5" 160gb Sata $77 delivered http://www.gizmomart.com.au/product_info.php?cPath=105_67_19…

    And this Samsung 160gb 2.5" 5400rpm/8m Hm160hi Sata-ii Notebook Hard Drive for $77.40 delivered http://www.gizmomart.com.au/product_info.php?cPath=105_67_19…

I've never heard of this site before so i don't know how reliable they are.
