Keep in mind that GoDaddy make lots of money off people who use auto-renewal. I got hit for US$90.85 for a 5-year .org auto-renewal. That's US$18 per year. I immediately moved to VentraIP who charge AUD$8.95 per year for new registrations and renewals.

Looks like $3.99. And only if you purchase two years, where the second year is $17….

    • try using the code that I have added

Also due to the fact that they'll add random products that you "need" to your cart when you renew, and the fact that they are really difficult to leave. If you have their (paid for) privacy service turned on, there's a 60 day delay before you can move your domains to non-bastards (you can't transfer a domain if you've changed your address in the last 60 days; if you don't change your address they'll publish it in the WhoIs records for many days before they release your domain).

Seriously, the $1.70 domain is only cheap if you are absolutely sure you will only use the domain for a year, and that it will never, ever become popular enough to sell.

Oh, did I mention that if you "pre-order" a domain through Godaddy (that is, pay money so their system will grab the domain name if it becomes vacant), when the domain becomes vacant they will put it up for auction, even though you've already paid them for it? That's right, the domain they never would have bought if you hadn't paid them money for it goes in to their auction system. They advertise it, they solicit bids, and if you're lucky enough to be the highest bidder then you get what you have already paid for! It's a little like buying something online, and the vendor takes your money, and then puts the item up for sale on eBay. If nobody pays more than you've already paid, you get the item you bought! Bargain!

Personally I've never had a problem with GoDaddy. I've heard a lot of negative things about the company, but never experienced them first hand.

Every time they've tried to up-sell me something, or set auto-renew, I just turn it off.
But I'm a more "advanced" user, having worked on websites for over 10 years, I know exactly what I need (and do not need).

Why not just switch to a registrar that charges less and doesn't use sneaky business practices?

      • Such as?

As I mentioned in the first comment, an example would be VentraIP. They don't jack up the price for auto-renewals. GoDaddy charged US$90.85 for a 5-year .org autorenewal (US$18/year) which is significantly more than what VentraIP charge (AUD$8.95/year incl GST).

        • Ventra IP are excellent as is their tech support.

          @eug:

Good suggestion! Their sister site, zuver, is offering .com.au for $22/2 years.

Provided their support and online portal is good, I'd gladly transfer over.
(Plus they give free DNS, and ID protection)

        • @massafiri: Nice find! (Even though it's blatantly advertised on Ventra.. lol)

Cheapest .com.au & .net.au without screwing around with coupons by the looks of it. Just renewed my .id.au through crazydomains with some targetted discount … Otherwise I would've jumped ship! Noted for next time though, thanks!

    • Agree. Yes, they use some tricks to make more coin, but you just need to be awake and you'll be fine. They aren't as bad as people make them out to be. Being one of the biggest domain name registrars probably helps explain why they get so much flak.

Personally, I can't stand their advertising. It's like trying to navigate the shopping channel!!

Check out namecheap, they've been doing Good Things for a while now.

      • you just need to be awake and you'll be fine

That's what I thought when jumping on one of their past $1-$2 deals - what's to lose? Then my payment got singled out for extra verification, and they wanted me to send them photo ID. Searched for reports of the same, and found stories about them following up with requests for further documents. Now, if we don't trust GoDaddy, we'd prefer not to go down that route and just cancel the order, right?

After my polite refusal and offer to pay via another method, GoDaddy cancelled the order, which was also fine by me, but they then kept the domain. Couldn't just register it elsewhere. Best I can recall, they held it for some months, and then a domain speculator apparently jumped on it (still has it today, two years later). Luckily, it was just a throwaway domain I didn't really care about.

I have found a code which looks cheaper then the Op posted. not sure how long the code will work.

      Cool story bro

      • +2

Wow really, I found the code as the OP did put one in, I then found a even cheaper one and changed the post again. I can see why people don't bother to help out others.

PS thanks for the neg vote

  • I think the catch is you need to pay a $10 fee to hide your details when people do a whois lookup

    • Whats so bad about people being able to see who you are?

      • +3

Because of all the marketing morons that start ringing and/or emailing you to flog stuff …. Trust me on that, Im sick of them!

        • Ah great. Thanks!
