Experience the classic space trading game Elite, as released on the BBC Model B in 1984, by Ian Bell and David Braben.

From the original box description:

"Command your Cobra space ship in a fantastic voyage of discovery and adventure, a supreme test of your combat, navigational and entrepreneurial skills. Trade between countless planets, using the proceeds to equip your ship with heat-seeking missiles, beam lasers and other weapons - corporate states can be approached without risk, but unruly anarchies may be swarming with space pirates. Black market trading can be lucrative but could result in skirmishes with local police and a price on your head! However you make your money, by fair means or foul, you must blast onwards through space annihilating pirate ships and hostile aliens as you strive to earn your reputation as one of the Elite!"

  • In an almost* completely unrelated story, did everyone see the Millennium Falcon / Batmobile teaser trailer? (spoiler warning)

*Mark Hamill in Wing Commander III makes them related - sort of

  • emulator won't detect the .sdd file, even in compatibility mode.

Yes it does. From the dropdown box, change your search to * . * and it will find it. I think by default it's set to search for SDS files rather than SDD.

The game is so old it ought to be in public domain any way.

  • Thanks!

This reminded me to check up on the remake, "Elite: Dangerous".
The beta is looking beautiful and I can't wait for it to be released next year.

Star citizen has kickstarted over $50M with no release date . People are absolutely hanging for a decent modernised version of elite .

      • In the meantime, No Man's Sky looks promising enough to possibly drive me to buy my first Playstation, a PS4… We will see.

Loved this game. But I have to ask if anyone found thargoids. I never found them despite how hard I looked for them.

    • +1

yes i certainly found them heaps of times…i didnt have to look -_- …..wamp wamp wamp Ah crap!!

    • I have to ask if anyone found thargoids

Yeah I did once but some cream cleared it all up…

    • Yep, nasty critters. Not sure if my memory is mistaken but it may actually have been possible to get a thargoid ship to fly in one of the versions of Elite? A mate and I played the arse out of that game on Amstrad back in the 80's.

      • Talking about nasty critters, don't buy the tribbles!

  • Holy s#¢t I actually had this game when I was a kid on my then state of the art Amstrad 128k(with floppy disk drive, huge upgrade from the 64k with tape drive)!!
Pretty sure I still have the actual game manual lying around somewhere too.
Favourite games on it was Batman & Bombjack
Lol I feel so old now…..

    • Also had the CPC6128, and spent many hours on Elite.

Going to hafta say, Oolite is an open source adaptation of Elite, with loads of differences, including expansions, which allows for new ships, new missions, modifications of equipment, ships, weapons and loads more. There's updating of sound and graphics, or even the wire frame original graphics if you prefer that.

    And it's also free!

    • Thank you

  • I still can't dock.

  • Its amazing how the soundtrack to this game is still so clear in my head, I guess its also because it was a classical piece of music, perhaps they did that to save some money on the musical score.
