Hi Roderigo. How old is the kid and what does he/she expect to be able to do with the phone? There are different answers for a five-year-old and a 15-year-old.

    Hi Roderigo

I recently bought a discounted Motorola Moto E for my 12 yr old (~$140); from my research, the low end Android smartphones are in the ~$100 to $140 range e.g.

If this kind of money is still too much for kids in your books, you can source used ones from eBay, etc.. While Samsung and HTC may be known for their high end phones, I find the compromises too severe for their low end versions. I have a personal preference for Motorola because I think they give the best value for the buck for low end Android phones.

  • If you end buying an LG, Huawei or ZTE mobile phone and it's network locked, ozbargain user Bagman can unlock it for a small price.

Check the Huawei G526 from DSE ($129), it has 4G capability, 5 megapixel camera and 1GB of RAM, good specs for a low price point.

There is also the Sony Xperia E1 for $99 via Target (locked to Optus or Dick smith with free delivery or $119 unlocked online. This is a lower end 3G phone with 512MB of RAM and 3 megapixel camera, also smaller at 4 inches.

And then there's the cheap china droids, this one is $87 via Deal Extreme (free shipping) and it has mediatek quad core, 1 GB RAM and 8GB ROM at 4.7 inches with 720p display. Only downer is the smallish battery.

    • scrimshaw highlighted an important purchasing consideration - network locked or unlocked. I personally recommend having a prepaid plan with an unlocked phone to give you the flexibility, to allow for changing needs especially for a growing teenager (before he/she loses/breaks it of course).
