I think it depends if you go for home birth or in a hospital.

  • Are these conception pills pretty much unnecessary? I'm sure we managed well for millenia prior…

    • .

    • I don't think they are necessary but your doctor should be best placed to answer that depending on your blood reports, etc. In the prior millenia, humans were a lot healthier overall too!

      • Oops, I thought this post was for Elevit… My bad…

        • Yes, Elevit and Menevit usually go in pairs. That's why I also posted a good price for Elevit from Chemist Warehouse.

hmmm… debatable really given that the average life expectancy is now much longer than previous millenia…

        • I still think average life expectancy is longer because of the advancements in the fields of science and medicine. In the previous millenia, people were a lot more susceptible to diseases due to a lack of vaccines. Things like Cholera, Typhoid, Pneumonia and so on which can be treated now with medication which wasn't the case back then. People died of these things. There were also pandemics like Measles outbreak which took a lot of lives. All that can be controlled now because of medications.

          That's my point of view.

          @Porco Rosso:

There were also dental problems, and malnutrition in many parts of the world at different times, complications leading to death during childbirth etc. There's a bottleneck theory that estimates the entire human population may have gotten as low as 500 breeding females at one point.

A population of largely malnourished, diseased and injured individuals (who were lucky enough not to die in infancy) isn't necessarily "healthier overall".. they just suffer from different health problems than today's population.

    • All these little things add up to greatly improving the chance of a successful pregnancy and healthy baby.

Note that for men, sperm takes about 70 days to form so no effect from these supplements in the immediate future! The directions say take 90 days prior to planned conception.

For what it's worth there are cheaper alternatives, albeit with different amounts of the ingredients (best to consult your doctor). I don't have a price for the Bioceuticals but will update with price when I visit local chemist this afternoon.

    Ingredients Menevit Bioceuticals Men's Essentials
    Vitamin C 100mg 200mg
    Zinc 25mg 20mg
    Vitamin E 400IU 36.8mg
    Folic Acid 500mcg 500mcg
    Lycopene 6mg 200mcg (0.2mg)
    Garlic Oil 333mcg N/A
    Selenium 26mcg 50mcg

Otherwise you can often buy the vitamins individually e.g. Folic Acid 0.5mg = $2.99 (Chem Warehouse)

    • Men's Essentials is $20 for 60caps

  • whatever happened to stop eating crap , exercise and looking after your gonads and yourself better?

if anything, the wife should get more nutrients because there is going to be a parasite sucking out all the vitamins in her body over the course of 9 months.

Yes, this should still be primary goal but most people just don't do it or can't do it these days!

That is why I've put a deal for Elevit as well. Elevit is for women who are planning to have babies.
Also, not very nice calling the baby a parasite (even though technically the baby will be sucking out nutrition from mother's body). If scientists agreed with this logic, then we wouldn't have 'mammals', we'd have parasite animals :-)

well, if you have trouble doing those things, good luck after the kid is born, you will definitely be paying for it in terms of lack of exercise and strength to carry and chase after them. lol.

My point is while supplements helps (Elevit isn't the only brand btw for those who are reading), it's not the be all/end all. Eating healthy, exercising and drinking lots of water really helps….

it's just my endearing term for them in my really bad days. first 9 months they suck the life out of mom, next 18 years they suck the life out of mon and dad's wallets.

why do we do it? I don't know, maybe just to stuff up society for another generation? maybe just because everything is worth it when they call you 'daddy/mommy'? ..etc etc…. 42
