Tips to speed up Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0?

Hi all,

Unsure which forum to put this question to, but its a tablet so closest I think is computing?

Anyway, I bought the Galaxy Note 8.0 on one of the Bing Lee deals a while ago. It's actually the perfect size tablet for me but the lag is starting to get to me…

Is this a Samsung specific lag? It's really cumbersome while my gf has an iPad next to me chugging along nicely with no issues.

Should I install a custom ROM? I don't really know anything about these yet. Which one would be the best for this tablet?

  • After installing CM11 onto my GS3, I have noticed less lag so it could be an option. Though I'm not exactly an expert in this field, I do think that the phone lagging is related to the bloatware on the firmware.

  • If you know how to do it then install a custom ROM. Just know that you risk bricking the device, but there are some recovery methods to unbrick it, just stressful, so have backups and download all the required software just in case.

Could have misbehaving CPU-hogging apps that run in the background. Check battery usage and CPU usage in then uninstall those bad apps are leaving a review telling them it drains your Note 8 and slows it down.

Install some apps like Watchdog. In Task Manager go to RAM and clear memory. There are even apps that will do it automatically but I don't recall the names. I use one on a laptop (Windows not Android).

  • How long ago did you buy it? Factory reset might help.

Also go into Settings > Application Manager > "Downloaded" tab > remove what you don't use.
Also remove all the Samsung and Google apps you don't use from the "All" tab.

  • Custom ROm is definitely the way to go. If you want speed and simplicity, any ROM that is based on CyanogenMod will be a good choice.

Why not give http://slimroms.net/index.php/supported-devices a shot?

  • Turn off programs after use and go to dev options then limit multi-tasking to two apps.

Or better yet, turn off all background processes in dev options, it's not like the iPad is doing any of that too.

I see this over and over again, with newbie Android users, they complain about how laggy Android is and then I see that they have 10 apps opened simultaneously.

    • Nah this isn't my first android. I've had galaxy s2, galaxy s3 and xperia. But I've never flashed any custom roms into any.

This is the forum you'll be wanting if you want to delve into the world of custom roms. Just be careful - if you're anything like me you'll look at the clock hours later and think "crap where did the time go?"

Also have you checked how much of the storage you've used? These sorts of gadgets are notorious for slowing down when they're near or at capacity.

    • Cheers

  • Have you tried installing iOS 8?

Okay that was horrible by me, i'm sorry

  • Thanks, seems like a custom rom is my only salvation… Will look into this further on the link above.

I'm not a new Android user but this tablet is not even 1 year old and its just laggy. I have minimum apps installed and always use the task manager to religiously exit open apps.

Battery gets drained way too quickly as well which is another issue.

I would try a factory reset before a custom ROM

    • You shouldn't be killing open apps, that may be contributing to the battery drain and causing more lag.
What does your battery stats say is draining the battery? Screen should be using ~90% of it, unless you're playing lots of games.
Clear caches, run an ftrim and if that and a factory reset doesn't help look at a custom rom.

  • If your device is supported then the CyanogenMod installer makes loading CM easy
