A cheap all-in-one color printer with the ability to take refilled ink

Hi all,

My requirements are pretty basic

  1. My wife's gonna use it to print out her assignment so mostly letter based document and occasionally cover page (So print quality just have to be readable)
  2. I might use it to print vouchers from time to time (Again print quality doesn't have to be excellent)
  3. Scan and copy capability
  4. Most importantly low running cost with the ability to take cheap refilled inks. I got a cheap Canon from Harvey Norman but it's about to lock itself down after we refilled it twice.

Any ideas are welcome :) Thanks.

  • Might be good to give a dollar idea what you consider cheap, we all have different concepts of this.

  • I'd be looking at a laser multifunction. The inks aren't going to evaporate if you don't use it for a couple of months like inkjet can.

  • BTW

Most importantly low running cost with the ability to take cheap refilled inks. I got a cheap Canon from Harvey Norman but it's about to lock itself down after we refilled it twice.

I dont which model you have, but you can also get cheap cartridges for many models on ebay, these have "new" chips that the printers read and dont lock down on.

Just refilling standard cartridges doesnt always reset the printer, so it finally stops because it thinks its the same cartridge and thinks that the ink has run out, so it shuts down to avoid damage it thinks it going to happen.

This might be the cheapest solution, getting replacement cartridges or even truly refillable cartridges

    • Thanks RockyRaccoon for shedding some light. We are currently sourcing our refilling ink from China for about $3 a tube (can refill up to 4 times). The printer is Canon MG3560 we paid $28 @HN. As for the dollar idea I reckon whatever cheapest possible way to get my current printer up and running again with the refill ink. The next best thing is to get another cheap printer which will take refilled cartridge.

      • If you are refilling "refillable" cartridges you may be able to do it. If its the original, while the cartridge will take it the printer will reject the cartridge.

You will need a chip resetter to do that or buy cartridges with Auto reset capability.

See here for a better explanation.

BTW most manufacturers do similar things and you will need to do the same, so switching printers will just mean a new learning curve and getting another set of ink

      • For cartridges containing chips, we were able to buy a full set of 5 replacement cartridges without chips that still work in our printer for around $13 on Ebay.

        • Care to share the links mate?

        • Will get hubby to track down the info from his ebay acc. and get back to you.

        • Sweeeeet, thanks!
