Would you still fly with Malaysia Airlines?

[Please no jokes or comments about the recent unfortunate events!]

They are having some really bargain flights to Europe and US.

I wouldn't worry about safety. I might worry about booking too far in the future with their financial woes.

    • Malaysia Airlines was 69% owned by a Government owned Wealth Fund. It will now go to 100% Goverment owned and be delisted from the Stock Exchange.

The CEO has been let go as well as 30% of the workforce - 6000 jobs.
The airline will drop unprofitable long haul flights and concentrate on regional flights.

Too lazy to look up the stats but apparently the chances of you dying walking down the street is more than the likelihood of you dying in a plane crash. So, yes I would fly with Malaysian Airlines.

    • +1

I heard the chances of dying in a plane crash are similar to being a minor US celebrity and having your nude photos hacked on Icloud

  • Well they did provide Magnum last time I went with them…

Don't know about 'best international airline' but if the price is right, sure. I think they learnt their lesson from the first one and the second was just plain shit luck.

    • +1

So what was the lesson from the first one? IIRC we still don't know what really happened right?

      • +2

The lesson was nobody expects the Malaysian Inquisition.

  • Flew Malaysian airlines the day of the 2nd disaster, from Vietnam to KL, didn't change much for us then and certainly saved us money after the first insert whatever it was.

I am booked to fly with them mid October. They have been good with their record. A bargain is a bargain.

flying with them is on my "bucket list"

  • Yeah I'd fly with them… They are dirt cheap at the moment - the missus had to make an emergency trip to Malaysia and she got the airfares for less than air asia (even before adding luggage)… The thing that gave us the shits is that they charge for a pre-allocated seat when they are a full service airline…

  • I used to fly with them years ago, but have since been flying mainly with budget airlines like Airasia, Scoot and I did not noticed anything difference between flying with MAS and these budget airlines. Normally fly with Qantas, Jetstar or Virgin for domestic or trip to New Zealand. Will not fly with them unless their price are competitive with budget airlines. Do not have issues with their safety though, if you die in a plane, I would say it is fated.

Shouldn't be a problem. You can bet that standards have been ramped up……..so you'll be getting a beefed up airline at bargain ticket prices. Malaysia Airlines have been super unlucky. Standards would be lower elsewhere but the bad luck hasn't happened for others in such spectacular fashion.

  • no chance in hell

  • Jumping back on this post ! A year after the tragedy.

    Hi everyone,

I was looking at flying to Europe for the summer over there to have a break of 2-3 weeks in France.
The cheapest flights I found are with Malaysia Airlines, with the A380 from KUL-CDG and CDG-KUL. All up about $1,600 returns.

The question I asked myself is: should I pay couple hundreds more dollars to have my mind relaxed or should I save money and go with Malaysia despites of the stress that I may feel due to thinking too much about the 2 unfortunate flights catastrophes that we are all aware of?

How comfortable do you think with flying with this company that went thru these loss last year?
I am not searching for advice, just wondering where do you sit in this way of thinking, because this is a very good case of Ozbargaining here I guess ! Mind vs Money

Because of what happened, I am guessing that all MH flights have to go through a lot of checks before they can fly, meaning airline should be safer than it has ever been before.

    Thanks for your feedback!

    • I've flown Malaysia Airlines quite a lot in both Economy and Business. Economy on the A330 and A380 is excellent compared to most of the major carriers. Business however, doesn't even hold a candle to any of their neighbours. None of their planes have 100% full flat beds (A380 does come closest however).

The A380 is fine, and despite some minor mishaps on Qantas's, it's a safe plane.

However, I do know a lot of internal problems happening with Malaysia Airlines the airline, and whilst its admirable to see people jump to their defence, saying 'I'd fly them again,' if they knew all the issues underneath, such as finances, crew, lack of transparency etc. they wouldn't be so knee-jerk in their response. I don't really want to embellish any further, as I don't want to scare people away from the airline.

However, most of those factors shouldn't deter you. If the price is right, economy on Malaysia's A380 is a pretty good experience, and one of the better experiences compared to other carriers.

Because of what happened, I am guessing that all MH flights have to go through a lot of checks before they can fly, meaning airline should be safer than it has ever been before.

Ummm…no. Try telling that to China Airlines in the 90s/00s….

      • Hi and thanks for your feedback.
Will you rather flying with Air China then vs flying with Malaysia Airlines, knowing the trip with Air China will be 2-3+ hours longer for a cheaper cost? (50-80$ less) ?

        Thanks !

        • If it's on then A380, then Malaysia Airlines. However, since Turkish are leasing two A380s from Malaysia Airlines, I'm not 100% sure if Paris is a guaranteed A380 route anymore (probably still will be, but who knows?).

          I don't mind Air China's 777-300ER, but economy on Malaysia's A380 would be better.

  • I just flew to Dubai on MH in business. Great service, good food, and the first lounge in KL is quite nice. It was half the price of QF business and I got a solid amount of status credits.

I would totally do it again.

  • I flew MH twice in the past month from MEL-KUL-KMG and back. They were almost full on the first leg. Empty of the second leg on the way up. On the way home they were empty with around 30 pax and chockers on the second leg from KUL-MEL. Mine you, they have 3 flights a day from KUL-MEL and all three were full. Then 2 weeks later I flew them again (same destination) and they were only half full on all legs.

They seem to focus on safety more than Qantas (I fly Qantas regularly - international).. ie, slight turbulance and the seatbelt sign comes on for long durations. The crew are fantastic and the service is good. Food on board is nice. Seats have plenty of leg room in Y class and J class sleepers are not fully flat beds (A330/777), not sure about A380. KUL airport is easy to navigate.

Malaysia Airlines actually has a system where you pay for Y Class fare and then make an offer to upgrade to J class.

Malaysia Airlines offers the best connection times when I fly into Kunming so I would fly them again, should I need to visit Kunming.
