    Great videocard, Own one myself.

wont bother with Graphics cards until they have new 20nm chips out! WE have been stuck on 28nm for SOOO long now its silly

    • Since DirectX versions take so long, probably a good idea to wait till Dx12 cards are about as well.

      • +1

The current gen cards are supposed to support DX12 (or partial support?), if you want to wait for the next generation of Radeons you'd be waiting a while. Nvidia is supposed to be releasing their 900 series in a couple days however.

        • +1

Well Nvidia 9xx series is unlikely to be 20nm and probably just a rebrand/slight improvement of current generation.

Apparently Apple took most of the 20nm capacity so it is unlikely that 20nm GPUs will be available in volume till late next year. Damn Apple!

        • Mid and high end 9xx should all be new and even if they don't do 20nm chips, they'll still be 50-100% more power efficient than Kepler and GCN cards.

        • @bentan77: So to summerise there is no need to hold off say another month for a GPU upgrade because no new models or versions are coming out worth buying or that will at least push the price of these down?

        • @yacman:
AMD: No new cards for a while except maybe a slower 285X
Nvidia: New cards in a few days to a few weeks
Price drops: Maybe but I doubt it would be enough to make a $400 290 look bad

        • @bentan77: Thanks for your input, I have been out of the loop big time with this stuff, now to decide if I try find another manufacturer since some people mention the Gigabyte can be loud :(

          Any recommendations?

        • @yacman: If you want the quiet I would just avoid Radeons. Most of the quieter ones will cost more, just get a 970/980, they should be pretty close in performance and use about half the power.

  • More interesting if it was the Sapphire Tri-X, the Gigabyte 290 is apparently pretty loud.

    GTX 780 or this?

    • This for for higher resolution monitors or wanting to crossfire any two AMD cards, over buying the same card compared to NVIDIA, which will save you in the future. :)

      • That was my thought when I recently bought the 780Ti. Planning on adding another (SLI) in 2-3 years. Just hoping the new 9xx's arn't 20nm or I may have made a poor choice.

    • Leaked information seems to be consistent that the 980 performance to be announced on the 24th this month, outperforms a 780ti by 10%, with a lower TDP (780s 250W vs 980s 180W) at the same price point of 780 on release. If you can hold out for longer, you could save yourself some disappointment. It won't hurt.

  • I do not game, I dont edit video, I do want a decent video card for a occasional gaming (not even once a month, but when I do, I go at it for days), I do play movies sometimes too… I guess Id like it to play tomorrows games too, you never know.

so what card do i want? I have a $70 piece of crap now. I ask because sometimes Ive read a particular 280 is better than a particular 290, or whatever. I dont really understand it all but assume there are differences in release dates.

Do I want this card? AMD x6 Black, Gigabyte UD3 I think, 16g Corsair 1866 ramm (wizz bang looking things), Antec 620w, LG 27" IPS (a tad glitchy when scrolling but I think might be graphics, but unsure)…I built it myself.

    • try for last season's/years model which often are on the clearance lists at msy etc.

  • Thanks so much for posting this, over the weekend I spent ages trying to find a good deal on a new 290, these new price drops are exactly what I was after.

  • +2

damn, i got a r9 290x from msy for 469 just last week, i probably would have gone for this instead.
also for anyone looking at the second hand cards to compare price with this, you have to be aware that the cards would have most likely been from out of a bitcoin miner after getting thrashed.

    • +1

+1 this. It pays to check out what else the seller is selling, I checked out one guy who didn't give any details about the card just that it was second hand, and he was selling a Butterfly Labs bitcoin miner, nooooooooooope.

just a touch cheaper than an entire ps4.

    • I'd still prefer just the card to look at then the ps4 though.

  • Dnno if anyone really cares, but the picture of the ports on the card on the shopping express listing shows it having 2 x DVI-I ports, when they are actually DVI-D

whats the difference? slightly higher mhz?

    • yeah, just different clock speed.

  • argh, so tempted but i won't bite this time.. if this was the sapphire tri-x i would have, for the supposedly lower noise and temps

  • +2

Thanks. Just got one for myself. Now to just go and buy a new Power supply, new motherboard… to go with it. :-)

  • which should i get OC or non OC version?

    • OC

      if you dont oc yourself

  • AMD are anticipating the release of the 980 series cards, I expect other retailers to follow.
