I've got an old laptop (bought in 2006, running XP pro OEM) that I would to like to give to my parents (tech noobs) to use.
I noticed that the hard drive has bad sectors, so I'm not sure how much longer it would last. It also has 30GB, which is not much in today's terms.
I was wondering can a SSD replace the IDE Hard drive?
I read this onlne forum
From what i can see I can replace the DVD drive with a caddy or play Dr operation.
Has anyone done this before?

You simply throw in a CF card into one of these and it turns it into a cheap SSD.
KingSpec makes SSD's in PATA interface. It is however quite expensive per GB

Also PATA is very slow and is limited to 133 mbps transfer speeds, so using an SSD in such a old laptop is a massive waste.
When you consider these adapters and SD cards / CF cards cost money too, it's often better to just drop the idea altogether and use the money instead to buy a Chromebook or Chromebox (Under $180 from Amazon). They will even play 1080p stuff and will be more capable than your ancient lappy. Also perhaps consider an ex-gov laptop from ebay, such as a refurbished Dell E4310 or E64xx series (usually around $200) with a Nehalem i5 cpu.
