QANTAS seat selection - cheapest method

Hi folks,
Long story short.

Six family members traveling to USA together on an American Airlines flight but a QANTAS service in a little over a week. It will cost $300 for seat selection for all six for there and back.

Available after payment for your flight has been made at qantas.com, Advance Seat Selection is complimentary if:

  • You are travelling on any Qantas operated domestic service.
  • You are travelling internationally in First, Business or Premium Economy cabins.
  • You are a Platinum, Gold or Silver Frequent Flyer or equivalent oneworld Frequent Flyer.
  • You are on the same booking and travelling with any of the above mentioned travellers.

So my question is, would it be cheaper to become a Silver Frequent flyer or equivalent oneworld Frequent Flyer? I am already an Emirates FF member but not sure that counts.
With 6 adult fares, am I crazy not to join QANTAS FF to take advantage of this offer next time if I can't manage it this time?

Thanks.
I'm new to travel.

Tip 1: KEEP YOUR BOARDING PASSES :) You can credit these flights' points/etc to a frequent flyer scheme AFTER flying as long as you keep your boarding passes

Tip 2: Use Seatguru.com to determine what seats are best for your flights

As a hunch, I think it'd be cheaper to pay $300 once off than gaining the required flights to obtain silver QFF. Are you planning much QF/oneworld flying in not too distant future?

Emirates are not a member of the oneworld global alliance

Just by joining QFF (which you can do free via everyday rewards) doesn't give you silver status and since you're flying in a week then there's no point anyway.
For example, getting silver requires 300 status credits which is 15 return flights from Brisbane to Sydney in economy.

Just choose them 24 hours ahead online…for free. It's a plane, unless you're not in cattle class you'll be squished anyway…unless in last row.

As bdl said, check seatguru even though it's fairly bare, but sometimes you hit gold with a massive red flag of a certain seat on a certain plane that has or had a dripping aircon thingy. You don't want one of those as I did on JAL. But it was only for a few hours and I was sleeping. Was way back in 2007 though but I should have put a note on seatguru about it.

Airline travel is shit, you just gotta put up with it sometimes and not get rage with entitlement like some people. 90% of seats in economy are pretty much the same, it's the 10% that is annoying - that ruins it. I've sat in last row near toilets but hey 12 hours of that isn't a big deal once it's over. You quickly appreciate the seats you get next time that are much better.

If you don't want to pay the extra $25 on top of your ~$1500 then quit whinging and don't complain. Just pay up or sit in silence.

The age of entitlement is over people. Well at least for the non-politicians.

  • Thanks all. I will use seatguru and I think we'll just take our chances on the 24 hr check in.
