I'd get whatever Clevo laptop special comes out in Christmas. the previous deal was pretty kickass
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/153846but otherwise, following Scotty's suggestion, the Gigabyte P34G v2 is a lightweight yet powerful laptop. It's a tad expensive though at $1.5k.
i7-4710HQ NVIDIA GTX 860M 2x DIMM slot up to 16GB 1x mSATA + 1x 3.5" HDD 14" 1080p AHVA display ~1.7kg
This will fit the budget without breaking the bank. 15.6 inch 1080p GTX 850M.

http://www.cplonline.com.au/msi-gs70-stealth-pro-2pe-009au-i…Thanks, the gs70 was the one i was looking at, just seeing if there were any better options still in the budget.
Also do you think there will be many new gaming laptop models out for Christmas? I'm thinking probably not, because the new Core-M chip is more for tablets and ultrabooks, and the more powerful chips aren't due til next year. And I haven't heard anything about new mobile graphics cards recently so I'm thinking there's not going to be much. Do you have any insight on this?
There is the GIGABYTE P15F V2. Also has 850M but with Core i7. It's a little more expensive still, MSY sells it for $1.3K. and CPL has it for $1.26K, and Scorptec for $1.25K

http://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Notebooks/Gaming_Notebook…Ah good catch! It's depressing spending over 1k on a laptop without an SSD, but i don't think you are gonna get an SSD equipped laptop under this budget without compromising elsewhere :( Thanks!
Don't get a gaming laptop. It's possible, it's cool to have it portable, but it will overheat and cause issues like blowing up fans and video cards. Unless you're just after games like LoL or CS, aim for a desktop. It's better value for money.
From someone who made the mistake of buying a powerful laptop and not a powerful desktop.
I'm with you 100%, but the laptop's not for me :P
Friends don't buy friends gaming laptops
Apparently, Dead Rising 3 cannot be played on a laptop. Capcom says that the game does not support laptop specs up front. What I am trying to say is that laptops might not perform similarly to an equivalent desktop specification. It has been proven in multiple websites that the desktop Nvidia GTX 750 for example is twice as powerful as the laptop's GTX 750M. Both are the same series numbers, but will perform differently.
More like Dead Rising 3 has been horribly ported, not even a Titan will save it.
Dead Rising 3 is a terrible example.
What games are you hoping to play?
