Using a Samsung G3 as a GPS at no cost?

I admit I'm totally ignorant about using a mobile as a GPS.

a friend is going to england and will be driving and wants a GPS

How can she use my old G3 as a GPS and it not cost her anything while using it?

does it have to cost? do you need a sim installed? thanks

  • You don't need a SIM during use, and I recommend copilot GPS using UK and Ireland maps, as that is what I used when I lived there.

Just make sure you install, configure and run it up the first time while online in AU, unless they are going to have Internet access in the UK (plenty of coffee shops and cafes offer it for free there).

  • You have a s3, do an experiment. Take your sim out then test weather u get gps signal or not. Then you will have your answer.

you need some form of data connection for it to tell you your position and download that map data. Buy an actual gps in England if you want no running cost.

Alternatively I believe u can pre download maps on your phone. But may be inconvinient in some cases.

Samsungs come preloaded with Navigon maps— assuming that you haven't modded the phone with a third party ROM and it is an Aussie Samsung it will have, by default — maps for Australia and NZ only. Extra maps can be purchased but keep in mind you might as well buy a standalone GPS from a shop when you arrive there.

No SIM means no Assisted GPS and this will force the phone to only use satellite signals but note the satellite acquisition lock takes a tad longer when you don't have a cellular signal.

    • Ended up installing navugon euro maps and the g3 worked a charm.

The best stand alone gps software for an android phone is Sygic…
    www.sygic.com

We always use it overseas and all around oz on both our phones.
