MEDION AKOYA E1232T MD 99410 10.1inch Windows 8.1 (Netbook) $399 at ALDI

61

10.1" Multi Touch-Notebook
MEDION® AKOYA® E1232T (MD 99410)
Windows 8.1 Update
Office Home & Student 2013 full version included
AHVA multi-touch display with IPS technology in 16:10 format
High-speed 7,200 rpm 500 GB hard drive
Intel® Celeron® processor N2807
4 GB RAM
Dolby® Advanced Audio™

This is a full fetch NetBook, only a bit smaller than a Mac book air 11.
This was what NetBook should have been a few years back.
Compare to the 8 inch tablets, this thing has a similar powerful cpu, but has full size USB 3 and USB 2 ports
4gb ram and oddly a 7200 rm hard drive,
I don't know whether hard drive can be upgraded to ssd but I am sure the ram is limited to 4gb because intel documentation limit.
349 would be worth it.

who would buy this if you want touch you would buyn windows 8.1 tablet or android and if you wanted laptop you would buy 15.6" laptop

either way id say this isnt worth it at that price.

  • +3

2 cell battery, 3 hrs run time

    good luck with that

  • 399 is a bit much
If it starts out 349, it would be a lot better, it has full fetch USB ports.
It is a NetBook and students are better off with netbook than tablets.
At this stage it is rather rather unique since likes if Acer asus did not put out notable follow up offers at the same 10 inch market segment with updated CPU chipsets

My pc is a bit sick, so I'll test one of these for 60 days.

    • +1

Yeah, retain the package and box, you be fine.

      • And retain the receipt!
I've never done that before, honest ;-)
Already planned to be there early tomorrow.

        • This thing won't fly off the shelf like the old days before ipad. I am not worried.
The only attraction is The price is right for back to school kids as these can be put in their bags far better than those 15 inch.

          :)

        • @jackau:
The rush for Aldi deals seems a dim memory.

For me its for "back to the office".

I'm putting mine in my bag tomorrow to take to my free OzBargain deal "office" (cubicle & use of kitchen with good free coffee & papers) overlooking the river in Brisbane. Handy for all those free high speed WiFi movie downloads I do there. Plus downloads to repair PC.

60 days will be long enough:-)

    • Almost every one of my Aldi returns has been due to faulty product. Far too many were DOA.

Although Medion branded products have a far better reputation than the other Aldi trademarked electronics (buy the cheapest product we can find & shove it in an Aldi box mentality), this product has some serious shortcomings like a non-standard keyboard (can be a real pain if you use several keyboards), it's slow, & short battery life. But the best way is to test it. My guess is it will fall short & be returned within the 60 day easy return period.

But I have been surprised before & kept Aldi product I thought I would be returning.

  • I've done a few trials and returns… I had to switch aldi…

Discussions about this on Whirlpool indicated ease of return depends on affluence of area. I don't think they see many returns at my local, so never a problem. Saw a new Aston Martin there recently (don't think they were shopping at Aldi thought). Took a PC back to a different location & manager was very unhappy - it'll look bad for the store & reduce our figures…

Easy Returns are necessary to sell Aldi electronics because it is mainly crap.

  • My first reaction was overpriced. But there's a few unexpected nifty features here: 16:10 IPS touchscreen, 7200RPM HDD, USB3 and full Office suite.
The product video mentions that the screen is full HD, and then says it's HD 1280 x 800.

      Screen resolution is yuck

      • +1

unfortunately, windows desktop application res can never be high on a small screen. Any one played with a surface 10 would tell you, it challenges their sight at the micro level buttons.

it is something we have to live with, and that was why Microsoft Has to throw out the Boxy Tile design that is better suited for high rest screens at smaller sizes.

the res is Usable, even touch functions, any one used the tablet 8 inch will tell you it is functional.

        functional is the key!

        • But is it desirably functional? Or deliciously functional? or disastrously functional?

I think you mean to say it is serviceable. windows is no iPad OS though.

        • I have a HP OMNI 10 which is a 10" with 1920x1200 I have no issues using it.

    • Sounds underwhelming.
"Intel Celeron N2807 CPU, which has two cores and a standard frequency of 1.58GHz (burst mode goes up to 2.16GHz)."
"It’s the slowest of the Celerons we’ve seen in recent times, and places the Medion firmly in the ‘simple computing’ basket. You won’t want to use it for much more than Web browsing and multimedia tasks, and heavy multitasking is out"

"The keyboard actually has a physical UK layout, which means that the left Shift key is not long, and the Enter key is not long either. It’s the sort of thing that can stifle your typing"

"Speakers are located at the bottom of the unit, but they shouldn't be relied on for much. They offer an understandably weak sound with very limited frequency response."

the CPU power is in line with the Quarcore Atoms in the tablets
but this one supports 4GB ram max and more instruction set
Those NUC mini box CPU at 179 on discount is almost identical to this one in power.
by compare to that, if this thing was at 349, it would be a way better bargain as it comes with screen / ram , hdd, keyboard and a touch screen and full windows package.

If the stock doesn't sell well, remaining stock may fall to your desired price level fairly quickly on manager special ;-)

Returned another faulty PVR recently. When scanned, the price had dropped from $199 to $129 in less than 2 months. Of course there was a full refund.

(It was the third faulty unit in a row. One was completely DOA, one stopped outputting HDMI in a week, and the last one showed major firmware issues - making 2 recordings of same program, failing to record other programs, & some bad design issues.)

The manufacturer to Aldi of those Bauhn units had tried to improve its abysmal quality by recruiting me to review pre-production models & recommend changes. It already used my reviews to improve their PVRs. Quality & production processes were so bad, there was nothing I could do to help.

So I learnt far too much of Aldi processes & manufacture of consumer electronics for Aldi :-(

Never a problem from Aldi on my returns, they are getting a great deal more from me, more than I ever get from their usually crappy electronics.

i'm trying to figure out why you should buy this, not a fast cpu, no long battery life, not exactly cheap, is this an example of "back to the future" for netbooks? lol

    • It's about 20% faster than Atom-based tablet but probably only about HALF the battery life

      • you're not referring to Bay Trail Atom cpu right? in above review "…It’s certainly no match for recent machines that feature Intel’s ‘Bay Trail’ version of the Atom processor, which can complete the same workload in about 1min 30sec.(vs 3min01sec)"

  • +1

I bought. When I unpacked it, I thought they had sold me a tablet by mistake. It is small.

    • waiting to hear more from you

      • This is not my area of expertise. So no review. But I might be able to answer some questions.

Although I lectured in IT, I now almost never use computers, only smart phones, so my knowledge has not kept pace with changes.

I've only completed the basic setup, as have other work to do in "my office" today.
