Powdered Malt

Hello everyone, long time lurker, first time to post.

When I was a kid I grew up with milk bars that'd serve milkshakes and you could pay 10c more for malt.

Now that I want to introduce malted milkshakes to my sons, I find that supermarkets do not sell powdered malt any more. Sure you can buy those "Malt Drinks" where the product is sweetened & has powdered milk as well as powdered malt, but that's not what I am after.

I want Powdered Malt suitable for adding to a home made milkshake.
Where can I get this in Sydney?

Thanks!

You can buy powdered light malt extract from homebrew shops, or the homebrew aisle in big w.

    • I've heard about going to a homebrew shop for malt.
But can anyone confirm if this is the same kind of malt that you'd also use in a milkshake?

  • I get my malt fix from Milo, Horlicks or Ovaltine. Powdered Malt sounds like a good idea if reasonably priced.

    • Yeah, these are what I've seen but don't want.
I've been in contact with a local Brewery Supply shop and they have advised me of what I need.

I'll pick it up tomorrow and give it a whirl over the weekend.

I have a can of Nestle powdered malt in the cupboard. My Dad gave it to me last year, but he would have got it at Coles or Woolies. It looks like a light blue milo tin.

I also do some home brewing. The dried malt extract (DME) is the same stuff. You can 500g in a box from the Coopers brewing supplies section in BigW - they also have "Brew Enhancer" boxes which contain a bit of DME but also powdered dextrose - not what you want.

  • Hey all

This is what was recommended to me:

And it made my milkshake AWESOME!
Of course in true OzBargain style I paid with my ING Orange account.
