And the fastest and best compression by considerable margin

        • I just downloaded last night to extract a .rar

    • Are they different companies?
      Which one is better though?

7-zip is just a file type, it's free Open Source. Like a text file .txt can be opened by various desktop programs on a Mac or PC.

I think you are talking about 7z.

7-Zip is a file archiver program.

UltimateZip would need to be substantially better than 7-zip to make me install software from an unknown company; I haven't seen anything in its list of features that would convince me to do so.

  • And usually none of them handle ACE files; just WinACE

    • I use WinRAR (have done for 15+ years)

It compresses smaller than any of the ZIP variations, though there is not a lot in it these days.
      It also handles ACE files.

WinACE, wow that's one I haven't used since the mid 90's, or am I confusing it with ARJ? Either way, both are pretty old now (and ARJ too is handled by WinRAR)

      • Winrar for the winRAWR

  • Very happy with deal. Thank you

  • OK OP, so I've 'ordered' it, what happens now? Is it emailed to me or something else?

But why?? 7zip is the same but free and so so much better…

      • Free does not mean must have. But what do I know, some people will jump at anything…

        • lol what you just said applies for both programs, might aswell stick with the old tried and true.

  • i tried this out as i've been looking for a free zip utility that can handle zipx as well as offer control to archive or extract with archive attribute control. 7-zip is great but only does zipx (sort of). this does zipx well enough but does not work with the archive attribute. it offers a button on the archiving operation to only archive if the attrib is set but it does not work. no option offered on the extract.
oh well. uninstall and stick with winrar for now.
