BBQ Gas Bottles - cheapest method of obtaining my 1st one

I bought a Weber using the ebay deal on the weekend. I don't currently have a BBQ so it will be my 1st attempt at buying a gas bottle. Where is the best place to do this and the best deal?

  • If you have an old, out of date bottle, easist way would be to surrender it for a new one at a swap and go place. You can sometimes find them thrown out when people have the destructable rubbish collections.

    • did that. found 4.5kg bottle and upgrade to 9 kg full at bunning for around $32

so if u can't find 9 kg one, find the 4.5kg, but you need to find one with proper fitting (not the small fitting for camping)

  • There are plenty of places in my area that just fill an empty bottle. Its cheaper than a swap. $20 vs $23. Plus the places that fill are closer to me than those that swap.

Camping shops might do the empty bottle on sale from time to time.

  • Stratco sell bottles and refill them cheap.

  • I bought a new 9kg bottle from Aldi for $25 during BBQ sales week and then swapped it at Bunnings for a full bottle for $22. Around Sydney, I found that the Bunnings swap and go was the cheapest option to get a full bottle. The swap and go at petrol stations is more than double Bunnings' price and I also couldn't find a cheaper place to fill up the bottle.

The only bad thing about doing it this way is that you're getting rid of a brand new gas bottle. Although the one I swapped it for at Bunnings looked just as new so I walked away pretty happy in the end :)

  • +1 for taking any old one you can get your hands on to Bunnings or Masters for a swap n go.
Gave them a small old 2-3kg camping BBQ type and took a full 9 kg for about $30

    • they only accept 4kg and with POL Valve not the camping valve.

      Also not the 2kg bottle.

      • Depends on whether the attendant knows what they are doing! For my 4.5kg bottle, they didnt have any, so they gave me a 9kg for the same price with no upgrade fee!

  • +1

I picked up an old bbq gas bottle feom my local tip for free and then swapped it for a full one at bunnings when it was on special for $20.00.
This would be your cheapest option.

    • That's how I got all three of mine.
