Microsoft Surface Pro 3 - Add $9.95 to Get Wireless Game Controller + $50 App Store Credit

110

Was checking out the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 and not getting much love (ie discount) from JB HiFi, so did a Google search and saw an ad come up. Clicked through, and what do you know?

The Surface Pro 3 Entertainment Bundle includes: Your choice of Surface Pro 3, an Xbox 360 Wireless Controller for Windows, and a $50 Windows App Store Gift Card, but is $100 cheaper than if you had bought all the components separately. Price includes delivery.

Another way of thinking about this is to pay $9.95 more and get the controller and a $50 Windows App Store card.

Separate components described below:
Surface Pro 3: Offering unmatched versatility, the 12-inch Surface Pro 3 tablet has all the power and performance of a premium laptop in a thin and lightweight design. It also comes with the all-new Surface Pen which delivers a natural writing and drawing experience. Choose from 64GB i3, 128GB i5, 256GB i5/i7 or 512GB i7 models.

Xbox 360 Wireless Controller for Windows with PC USB Adapter: Discover greater precision, comfort, and control. The Wireless Xbox 360 Controller for Windows gives you a consistent gaming experience across both Microsoft gaming systems, so you can play on your Windows-based PC and Xbox 360. The included USB receiver plugs into your PC to let you use up to four wireless controllers and headsets at once.

$50 Windows App Store Gift Card: Buy and download apps, games and more from Windows Store on your Windows 8.1 PC, your Windows Phone 8 or from select Xbox stores. With over 100,000 apps to choose from, there's something for everyone. Plus, this gift card never expires, so you can use it whenever you want.

  • 256 GB and above models should provide reasonable utility after installing windows updates. You could probably add the adobe suite as well.

I am currently experiencing capacity problems with my 128GB acer iconia w700. Plan ahead, but you can basically rule out the 64GB model due to windows updates and the OS. 128 GB is alright if you make sacrifices.

    • I usually do a disk cleanup after updates by right clicking on "local disk" you can clean up the leftovers from the updates. Gives back a lot of space….

It still absolutely baffles me that Microsoft insists on not bundling the Surface with touch and/or type covers given that they are ESSENTIAL to using the device.

BTW I own a Surface Pro - I love it - I just don't understand why they don't start bundling the two together especially given the branding of the product is ALL about the keyboard.

    • +1

because people will pay $150 just for the keyboard, but not an extra $150 for the tablet, even if the keyboard was included.

      Blame consumers.

    • what for? for money.. if they bundled it together it'll cost more than 1000 which wont sound attractive. What i dont get is how can they still sell these for 1000… they tried selling them for 700 and no one wanted to try them for that price.. what makes them think people now will pay even more to try one of these…

    • They make too much money on the covers at ~$150 a pop. I've been using the MS Wedge keyboard which cost $15 when they had the hardware rebates lol.

  • Gee this is really tempting… I was in the market for a new laptop and possibly replacing my current tablet (Nexus 10). Would the 256gb i7 model be suitable for basic video editing (5-10 minute instructional videos on maths), for use in my classroom, and possibly light gaming?

I am also curious if anyone that owns a Surface Pro 3 can verify if it is possible to use this to annotate the current screen (as an overlay?) and various PDFs and text documents as I have electronic copies of textbooks and notes that I can use to teach with?

P.S. I am also unsure if the $450 premium for doubling the storage to 512gb would be "worth" it…

    • Should be fine granted your tablet is plugged in. As for gaming, anything from the M$ store - yes, triple A titles - maybe when it's at the lowest res.

You can use a pdf editor or copy/pase pdf pages onto one note and start drawing.

512gb msata cost ~$3-400, i'd say its worth it.

  • I got the Surface Pro 3 from JB Hifi on launch day. Upgraded from the Surface Pro 2. Good upgrade and excellent for work as a digital notebook.

If you don't need the gaming accessories pack you can try negotiating to get 10% off at jb like I did. Got it without an issue.

Keyboard is expensive but necessary. U can also get 10% off it from jb Hifi. It's not bundled as they wanted to offer choice of colours but they should have just made it an automatic discount if u buy them at the same time.

    • But the OP tried that, that's why he went searching online…

The best way to get money off the cost of the surface pro is to have a student email address or a friend who has one. 10% off the pro and type cover, delivered to your door all without having to waste time at JB etc.

      • I tried but their cart function was stuffed. Tried about 6 or 7 tines using different browsers, clearing cache, etc.

But in the end jb Hifi beat the student prices by a little bit and I walked out the store without having to wait for delivery.

A tip I learnt from Whirlpool, go on a Thursday night or Sunday arvo just before closing as they're more likely to do a deal to hit their commission targets

        • which JB did you haggle with?

      • Thanks for the heads up. Went back to the same JB HiFi. Discount offered is now significant - to the point I should almost downvote my own deal - because I could get the haggled discount, buy a controller and a voucher, and still be ahead of the standalone tablet price!

        • +1

How do you haggle with JB exactly? Do you pretend to not know much about the device so they explain stuff lol? Or just ask them right out :/

Never really know how what's the best way to do it.

  • +1

For complete portability they should have offered a 4G model. The last thing I want to do is tether, or plug in a 4G modem after spending a fortune on a tablet PC.

Work pays for data (2.8TB+ / month of Telstra 4G data pool) and the device, I just want the convenience of being able to plug in a sim. :)

    • Exactly! Dunno why 4g is not included.. (Even 3G would be a good start..)

  • Could this be combined with student education discount (10% off)?
