Best networked media player out there currently - ASUS O!PLAY HD2 any good?

I currently have an AC Ryan Playon DVR HD which, apart from the fact has pretty shocking/shonky tech support, does not properly decode DTS from an mkv - it downmixes to stereo.

I'd like to be able decode and play multichannel audio from an mkv to my 5.1 home theater setup. I already have a chromecast (from ozb of course) and a cinevia protected (arg!) Samsung BD-H8500 (also ozb special lol). Went looking and found the Asus O!Play HD2 on MSY: http://www.msy.com.au/vic/clayton/pc-accessories/5963-asus-o…

Does any one have any suggestions if this may be the way to go, or if there are better options out there? This Asus unit seems to be a couple of years old and reviews seem to be mixed… But if it is able to decode DTS into true multichannel surround, which according to the specs it's able to, then it should do me.

If it matters I am able to have the player hooked up to the home network (wired) and I also have a HP N54L NAS (also from ozb LOL!!) hard wired up, running FreeNAS 64bit.

What does everyone use?

  • Also just found this one, doesn't seem like many reviews around…

  • Whats wrong with the Chromecast?
Buy BubbleUPnP and it'll transcode the audio into something the CC understands and it ought to be able to handle the video fine without requiring Transcoding.

    • Not heard of bubbleUPnP but will check it out.

I have MXplayer pro, wonder if that will decode DTS. Will have to do some experimenting.

Although with the chromecast… how will I hook up my external HDD with the mkv file in it, to play? I'm assuming you mean to leave the mkv on my NAS and stream it via chromecast?
