Fines for Jay Walking : Sydney CBD

Hey guys,

Just thought i would give you guys the heads up, i work in city and notice a few people getting fined for jay walking the last few days (some sort of "crackdown"). The police are mostly stationed at these locations.

Corner of Elizabeth st and Bathurst st

Corner of Pitt st and Bathurst st > I've seen 3 pedestrians get fined at this location

Corner of George st and Bathurst st (opposite KFC)

so if you wondering why there are so many police standing around the traffic light … well now you know :)

*some are also stationed outside Town Hall

Same in Melbourne CBD every now and then.

Would be cool if they heavier fines for jaywalking while looking at their mobile phone, or listening to headphones… or doing both at the same time. lol

  • Perth CBD.

George and king (outside apple store)
    seen that a few times
and outside Wynyard park (York and Margret street)

Pitt and bridge… seen it many times.

Anyway they appear to fine those using mobiles/headphones and lecture those who arent. Pretty damn obvious, high vis jackets or police bikes with flashing lights.

    YMMV

If you're more than 20metres from the lights it not jaywalking

Bathurst street has heavy jaywalking because the traffic lights are plenty and long.

The serious problems with that Bathurst street area is more cars quing across the intersection

And of course mobile phone jaywalkers

    • They aren't targetting people crossing the street at random locations outside of lights. They are targetting people who cross at lights when there is a red signal.

What he's saying is don't cross at lights, cross 20 or more metres down the road to avoid any potential fine.

To be fair, a lot of pedestrians have been skittled at these intersections.
Last year they had folk handing out safety pamphlets at the same places seeking people to behave more safely.

    • I work in that area, one of the best place to upgrade to Hong Kong type overhead walkways

surely the time taken to walk over a pedestrian bridge would be a similar amount of time to wait for the pedestrian crossing - negating any public benefit.

not really, Sydney lights really sucks.

          also continuous flow of traffic

      • Problem doing overhead walkways is that need to be wheelchair accessible which take up massive footprints

Daily occurrence in Brisbane CBD with no one let off

    • Which is great, I noticed a big improvement last time I was in the city.

I have witnessed a jay walker get struck by a fast moving 4WD and have no desire to see anything like that ever again.

    • Odd, can't say i've ever seen someone caught in the CBD for the 1.5years i've been working there.

I've seen them a fair few times at either end of Pitt Street Mall (Pitt & Market or Pitt & King Streets). Given the number of sheeple that wander out into the traffic without looking it's something I certainly support.
