To people who use these, have they ever come in useful? I understand dash cams if you're on lawless Russian roads, but Australia?

    • ive had one for like a year, drive few hours a day. havent caugh anything interesting yet. Would be good in an accident though

    • i've been a victim of a hit & run crash before i had a dashcam, so that was my main reason for getting one. they're also good for documenting road rage/dangerous driving incidents, scumbags dropping lit cigarettes and vandalism while the car is parked (not all dashcams can run off their own power source when the car isn't running, mind).

don't need to wait for our roads to deteriorate to Russian standards!

So what happens to someone that you video dropping a cigarette butt.. Do you take it to the police and waste their time?

        • Hahaha exactly what I was wondering

        • +3

No, I pick the butt up and give it back to them.

although i'm sure the police would be interested if it resulted in a fire..

Do you take it to the police and waste their time?

Nice try at being a smartarse clever, but no.

Ever heard of the EPA? Google it. It's known as the EHP in QLD now, apparently.

Members of the public can report littering to the agency and letters are sent out to the offenders (they will track down owners of the reported vehicle if it's a littering-from-a-vehicle offence, like cigarette butts) to warn them that they've been witnessed littering - and include details of the relevant fines.

At the moment, the EPA can't enforce any fines/punishment if members of the public have sent in reports, so the letters in a sense are powerless… but they do also warn the offender that if they're caught doing the same by an officer (be it police or environmental), they will be fined.

So the letter does hold some meaning, if only to warn offenders that there are risks of being caught and being fined. You never know who is in a car near yours when you litter. I'm sure some people would curb their behaviour knowing this fact (along with the knowledge of the actual fines).

@waterlogged turnip: in WA, the Keep Australia Beautiful Council sends out infringements based on reports. not sure how much they follow up on these infringements, i guess it depends on the seriousness of each incident and the evidence they have

Yep have had one for a 6 months and caught an accident, a big crow flying with a mouse hanging from it, a couple of near miss motorcycle accidents etc. Unless something actually happens you forget you have one. It feels like a safety blanket when I fire up the car and hear the jingle it plays as it starts up and does its thing. The nice thing is you never need to touch it. Tip: When you check your tire pressure then that same day just do a video check that the recordings are still happening A-OK i.e the memory card hasn't become corrupted in the heat and the constant writing (if in a hot area consider a cam with a capacitor vs battery).

Just as a guide … Some of their prices seem on the high side e.g G1W is A$89.95
Here is the G1WH (upgraded model) on baggood standard price US$49.99 delivered (sign up to news letter and get 5% off) http://www.banggood.com/Full-HD1080P-G1WH-LCD-Car-DVR-Record…

For the sake of ~$50 plus $20 for a 32GB SD card, I felt it very worthwhile.

Imaging being stationary at an intersection or mall car park, and the car in front of you rolls backwards and hits you, but they claim to their insurance company that you rear ended them? When it comes down to your word against theirs, without proof, or an independent witness (eg not someone you know who was with you in your car at the time), then generally nose to tail collisions will favour the front vehicle.

I have two G1WH's in my car, one facing forwards, the other backwards, and my Dad has 3 of them across 3 trucks in his small business.

I have saved a few choice bits of video… like people doing U turns and going the wrong up up a motorway onramp because the motorway was busy, or dozens of pieces of polystyrene flying off the back of a ute at 110km/h on the motorway while other cars tried to alert the driver.
I haven't caught any accidents in progress yet, but have footage of driving past a few accident sites with firetrucks etc.

My Dad has video of a lady opening her car door (without looking) as he was driving past, and the edge of her door clipped the side of his truck (right near the back). He stopped and spoke to her in person, but the camera also captured both sides of the hands free conversation where she later phoned the business number to say that one of his trucks had run into her car - and recorded her calling him a "4-eyed c#nt" when he told her he had it on video, and he was happy for her to discuss with the police!

Long story short - for a few $$, Id rather have one and never need it, than find myself in a situation where I wish I had one, and instead am out pocket hundreds or thousands of dollars in insurance excess etc.

      • How do you power two of the cameras at the same time?

        • +1

double adapter for the lighter socket. i bought a couple from COTD for $9.95 + s/h and they seem to be decent quality. i'm not an electronics expert so didn't open it up to inspect the soldering etc.

        • Thankfully my car (RAV4) has an accessories socket in the back.

  • That G1W seems like a good deal at Bang Good???

  • Took a punt and have ordered 2 x Novatek NT96650 from Bang Good. Thanks for the info guys. ;)

    • Hey stalker I wanna pm you. Can you enable it plz, thx.

  • I just wonder that in an accident insurers will look at all video and maybe cancel cover because they see earlier in the day you went through an amber light for example. I

    • obviously you would only cut the scene where the accident happened…………..

    • You set them to record in 'chunks' i.e my one is set to record in 10 minute blocks until the card is full then it just starts overwriting the oldest. Mos common settings are 3, 5 or 10 minutes as an example. That way the footage is easier to work with. An 8gig card gets me about 1.5 hrs at 1080 resolution (if my memory serves me right). So if I pull the card out there are just over-lapping chunks of video. In the event of an incident where you wan to 'lock' the footage there is a button on the device you hit that preserves it. So all very easy. Plus don't forget you could easily edit the footage to just show the incident.

  • I purchased one of these and just installed it yesterday http://www.ebay.com/itm/121387416455
I've put an old 4gb class 4 card in it until another MicroSd card deal comes on here then I'll grab a 32gb which is apparently its max.
Unit is so tiny but footage is very clear.
I have ran a USB cable to the glovebox which has a USB port in it. I'm thinking of putting my Sony Powerbank in between the USB port and the dash cam so it can record when the car is off as the USB port shuts off about 20 seconds after the car does.

    • Thats not a bad idea - however keep in mind every night when you park at home, in those 8-12 hours you will overwrite all the previous days driving footage, so would need to copy any required footage off straight away. Or unplug the camera from the power bank when you get home.

I drive ~2.5 hours each day - the 32GB card (max supported) gives me around 5 hours recording at 1080p - so a couple of days coverage.

If you drop it to 720p this bumps to ~9 hours. 720p is more than enough to see everything thats going on - just harder to read number plates if you needed to.

The default video segment time for the G1W range is 3 minutes - so I get around 50x 345 MB video cips per 2.5hr daily commute. It puts them into daily folders.

      • I have my one to power down a few secs after power off from car cig lighter. So I don't bother recording when parked (at this stage). 8gig seems about right to me as that is 1.5hrs of coverage.

  • As much as I want to support local businesses, their prices are having a bit of a laugh aren't they?

Compare the price of a Mini 0803 from foxoffer.com with them… If you load them up with all the usual accessories (32GB SD card, GPS mount) the price difference is $75AUD… That's a lot of markup.

  • Even though there is a 10% discount and free shipping, the prices from this site are still very poor.

The g1w (recommended by Dash Cam Talk as the best "bang for buck" camera).

    Advertised $89.95 = $80.96 delivered (10% discount free shipping)
Reputable ebay seller = $52.46 delivered.

    • To be fair, thats the cost of doing business in Australia and having Australian support. DCA probably buy 50 or so of their popular camera models at a time, and are hit with import duty. They offer free postage even though the real Australia Post cost they absorb is probably ~$3-5. If they turn over more than ~$45K a year they need to be GST registered so that is an extra 10% on top to the ATO.

So the camera I can import for $50 costs them ~$66 to deliver to me at cost. If they sell for $80 thats only a $14 profit.
Then they have to provide their own warranty support/replacements (another postage cost) plus the international postage cost they are hit with sending faulty units back to their supplier.

But yes, from a purely consumer price point of view, buying from eBay/Banggood/FoxOffer is cheaper

My last 4 G1WH cameras (which cost more than the older G1W) cost me AU$50 (and some cents) delivered from Banggood using a voucher code posted here.

Awesome, bought a VicoVation Marcus 4 recently and needed to buy the quick fit, given they don't include it in this model and you also need the quick fit to put the CPL filter on.
