Nintendo today announced a "New" Nintendo 3DS (& XL) console, with games exclusive to the new console.

The first game to be exclusive to this is Xenoblade Chronicles for the "New" 3DS, which is not backward compatible with current 3DS consoles. There's going to be more exclusive titles.

This is pretty much a repeat of Game Boy Color, where you couldn't play GBC games on the old GB.

How do people feel about this?

Oh and speaking of Xenoblade, Shulk has been officially confirmed as a SSB character.

  • Checking my email before the news this morning, this was the first I'd heard of it!

I don't mind it. I won't be getting one, but will wait until the next generation, which will almost certainly be backwards compatible, and just catch up on the few exclusive games then. Like how all the DSi ware is available on the 3DS now.

It looks pretty swell, though, and if I didn't have a 3DS XL already, I'd be holding off and waiting for this to come out.

Where did you read it wouldn't be backward compatible? The new games won't work on the old console, that was confirmed, but they never mentioned the new console wasn't backward compatible. Hell, they showed off MH4 which is for the original 3DS not the new one unless they made an announcement about that which I missed.

Given that the trailer for the console showed backward compatibility, and Nintendo is pretty good when it comes down to backward compatibility, I'm going to guess its backwards compatible unless I can find a statement from Nintendo saying other wise. If thats the case, then I will be sad.

"The new exclusives will take full advantage of the new CPU and visuals and will utilise the second circle pad. However, older Nintendo 3DS titles won’t get a visual boost."

Sounds like Backward compatibility to me.

    • Think he just meant the new titles wont be backwards compatible with the older system, which is a strange way to put it. lol.

You typed a pretty big response for something that was obviously a mistake :P It's even pretty much explained what he meant in his second sentance.

      • Yeah I read his second sentence and it become even more confusing and weird.

My response still isn't wrong, even if it does upset some people lol.

        • Yeah it wasnt me who downvoted you.

        • @RI4V4N:
All good. If you had it wouldn't of been the first time, many times have we engaged in a battle of wits, many times have I gone full retard and deserved the downvotes!

Or just, you know, maybe a semi-trolly comment, I know you know what thats like :P

          @heywes:

I'm just glad to not be the most negged for once.

  • Argh! I just bought a 3DS XL and 4 games two days ago :-/

your probably going to get a good years use out of it as it won't be released in Europe unitl 2015 and i doubt it will be early 2015

    • +1

worth it. you get to play Smash Bros and Pokemon Omega/Alpha.

  • Most people are annoyed about this, but I like it.
The 3D on all angles is great. Some games require you to move the 3DS around for gyro controls, and with the current 3DSes this messes with the 3D.
I believe the added processing power is mainly for the new features rather than new games.
The entire system menu seems to load faster, there's NFC support, custom themes for the system menu, the eye-tracking 3D, wireless file transfers with a computer, automatic brightness adjustment based on detected light.
All those things need a bit more processing power.

There's of course alot of other improvements, battery life, new analog stick, power button is outside on the unit, customizable faceplates, and probably other things that you need to use the unit to notice.

I think the revision is warranted.

What bothers me is the release date. Like the original 3DS it's being released early in the year rather than before Christmas.
Smash Bros is coming out at the end of the year. If they had the new 3DS out at the same time there would be more reason to buy both the new games and the device.
I am thinking about trading in my 3DS before it drops in value (if it's not too late already) but all these games are coming out before the new 3DS comes out so I'm not sure.

I dont know anyone that uses 3D for more than like 30 second periods though.

Surely we could have a new hand held, with no 3d and it wouldnt have to waste processor power on making it 3d, it could have far better graphics.

      • I'm with RI4V4N (I hate your name btw, god dammit, pick something easier to type) on this one, would have rather then 3D function be removed and that power shifted to fluidity of the game or graphic grunt.

I only use the 3D for cut scenes, although I admit it does look good during those.

        • I played Link Between Worlds for its entirety on full 3D, and I barely even noticed the severe vision loss when I had finished!

To be serious, LBW is the best utilisation of the tech, and I did actually play the entire thing on max, and it never hurt, or felt too much. It's the best example of the 3D being used correctly.

Fire Emblem is also quite good, but I need to slide it back as you said a bit every now and then.

        • @FrankMcFuzz: mario 3d land?

        • @FrankMcFuzz:

You make a point, i think on turned it on for LBW as well a bit.

    • Some people are predicting that MH4U is gonna be the last game of the old 3DS software series, with games after being either compatible with both or exclusive to the new one.

      • As long as I can play pokemanz and MH4U, idc.

  • We wont see this anytime soon as Nintendo said we wont see this before 2015 and it will launch in Japan first so if you have already got or just got a 3DS you will be ready for an "upgrade" by the time we can get our hands on it

Handheld is a shortening of the correct term for these devices; handheld console. So, about 24 years ago.

  • The thing is, now I don't know whether to wait for this or get a 2DS/3DS/XL now. As much as I wanted to buy one for ORAS, I'm just concerned about how diminished the experience will be when the new 3DS is released.

e.g will they release 2 formats of each game (one for new and one for old?). The new hardware is awesome and concerning at the same time.

    • If you've waited this long to get one, just wait a few more months and get the new one.

      • Google is your friend …

      • Will it really only be a few months? Just realised Japan gets a release in October, 2014. And confirmed no US release this year, hopefully it won't be too well into 2015 until it comes out.

        • Q1 of next year is the western release.

    • the game won't have improvements for the New 3DS, have you seen X/Y? They're very poorly optimised.
If you're getting a 3DS for Pokemon you might wanna get the 2DS since most of the game is in 2D.

  • Unlike Sony, Nintendo still region lock their games, correct? Meaning if early adopters would have to buy all their games from Japan (assuming they know Japanese)?

    • I'd assume this one would be region locked as well, but there hasn't been any confirmation. I'd love it if they made this console region free, especially when there's some games that we can't get at all due to our region.

      • Oh boy. If they made it region free, I might be tempted to update from my 3DS XL. But chances are that it will stay region locked. And even if they make it region free for cards, you would still need to use the eShop from the region you bought it from.

  • Nooooo! I was looking forward to buying a 3DS XL as I'm going overseas in December-Jan and it would have been an excellent travelling companion!!

Now I'm conflicted as to purchase a second hand cheapie somewhere for ~$100 and get the new one next year… Sighhhh

    • +1

Second hand it for sure if you can't wait.

  • +1

got my second hand one today for $99 :)

    • +1

Nice. good price, you will defs enjoy it.

    • Where'd you get it for $99 if you don't mind me asking? Strange too how it's $99 and not $100.

      • cash converters webshop. Very similar to eBay man. Used of course.

However the next day I saw one go for $78 shipped off eBay. Doh!

So Australia is getting these November 21st, the rest of the world (apart from Japan) have to wait for TBA 2015 release.
    Pretty cool!

A couple surprises though, we're not getting the black New 3DS, and they don't come with chargers.

    • I'm pretty sure its still illegal to not sell it with a charger in Australia. Same with the XL, Nintendo had to have a charger with it here but not in the UK.
I have 3 chargers because they are required to come with one by law (despite them not coming with them in EU).

      • Consumer guarantees on products and services

Since 1 January 2011, the following consumer guarantees on products and services apply.

Products must be of acceptable quality, that is:

        safe, lasting, with no faults
        look acceptable
do all the things someone would normally expect them to do.

Acceptable quality takes into account what would normally be expected for the type of product and cost.

        Products must also:

match descriptions made by the salesperson, on packaging and labels, and in promotions or advertising
match any demonstration model or sample you asked for
be fit for the purpose the business told you it would be fit for and for any purpose that you made known to
        the business before purchasing
come with full title and ownership
not carry any hidden debts or extra charges
come with undisturbed possession, so no one has a right to take the goods away or prevent you from >using them
meet any extra promises made about performance, condition and quality, such as life time >guarantees and money back offers
have spare parts and repair facilities available for a reasonable time after purchase unless you >were told otherwise.

Nintendo would be breaking several of these if they were to go through with selling the new 3ds without a charger.
To sell a mobile device without a charger would be to sell a product that will not work (at least not without additional charges).

        • So, who is going to complain to the ACCC?

        • @Juddy: Some parents prob will when they buy one for their kid on christmas when the stores are closed and cant use it.

    • Yeah this is pretty neat. Australia getting something first for once!
Nice timing too, I just broke my 3DS XL and was looking to replace it soon.

  • Personally I think this is another silly move by Nintendo re. marketing - another stupid move of fragmenting their platform base. Having a New 3DS with games that won't work on the "old" 3DS will bring about similar issues to how some customers thought the Wii U was an accessory for the Wii & their games were cross-compatible on the older console. Why couldn't they do a completely new console instead of a partial refresh? It's not just aesthetics this time but locking off part of your gaming market if there's a new set of gaming compatibility.

The only thing that would get me to "upgrade" would be if the better hardware meant they could finally sell GBA games on the eShop. Anything else, well… I can't see too many developers trying to stick with just the New console over publishing to both where they can.

  • So, has anyone thought of how much of a pain in the ass it will be to transfer ur content from ur normal 3DS to ur new 3DS? They dont use the same memory cards anymore so the data transfer would be difficult no?

    • +1

You could use a PC to transfer files from one SD card to another (eg. going up in size). I presume this would be the same for SD -> Micro SD.
      http://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/answers/detail/a…

Now, transferring all my DL game licences… THERE'S a question I'd want answered. :-)

      • Hmm, just wanna make sure this is gonna work for the new 3ds first I guess. Also I hate the fact I have to buy the new 3ds before trading in my old one. Trade values are gonna drop pretty hard.

    • SD to MicroSD card adapters are pretty cheap. Could use one of those do the transfer.

  • Now I'm REALLY annoyed I bought a 3DS now when the new one comes out this year instead of next as reported…..
