Riedel O Series Giftpack @ BWS. $50 for 2x Stemless Riedels and a Shiraz

30

BWS has a Fathers Day promotion for a $50 Cat Amongst the Pigeons Gift Pack.

Based on the image, it contains 2 stemless Riedel "O" Shiraz glasses (which retail at Dan's for $49.99 a twin pack) and a bottle of Cat Amongst the Pigeons Shiraz (which is currently $14.25 at Dan's in any six). Item description is minimal, so its possible the pack is for other varietal-specific Riedel glasses too.

I love the O series Riedels, and this gives you the glasses and a bottle of wine for just 1c more than the glasses' RRP. I saw the ad in the Sydney papers and it looks like it is nationwide.

  • But are two stemless riedels really worth the RRP? And is the wine really worth that price given that it's ONLY available through a woolworths branded store? http://whomakesmywine.com.au/thelist.html

    • I don't know if they ever had stock, but I want this Dan Murphy's deal!

Think I also got a dozen of the cat amongst the pigeons and liked it.

Delving into subjective territory here, but I much prefer drinking wine from a thin glass that keeps some of the aroma and vapour inside. Unfortunately, those thin enough for this and strong enough not to break don't come especially cheap.

I won't pay more than this for a Riedel glass (and trust me, their hand blown stuff is a lot pricier) and I'm not averse to using cheaper glasses for when we're entertaining a few people, but on the whole think this is a reasonable deal.

In terms of the wines distributed by the majors*, anything labelled as coming from "International Liquor Wholesalers" is a Woolies internal line (including this bottle). Some are essentially cleanskins labelled for people who don't want the stigma of being seen to buy them, while others can be fantastic bargains. It can be hit and miss, but for 1c more than the cost of a normal gift pack, I'm willing to take the risk. Plus, I can always cook with it if it isn't great.

    • Full disclosure, in my uni days I worked for a bottle-o owned by one of the big two.

Fair do's. Also agree with you re: vessel quality.

Follow up question sir, where and what price are the cheapest Riedel's you see around? Or are we always stuck with RRP/being subsidised by other items?

I managed to get a few very cheaply when a kitchenware place was going out of business and I now only buy every couple of years to replace breakages. I've generally achieved this through the gift-pack "subsidies".

Prior deals here seem to indicate most come up as either subsidy offers or department store xx% off sales.

Cat Amongst the Pigeons is actually fairly decent, especially the Shiraz. The standard price at BWS is $19, but I'd say that most weeks they are available at 2 for $30.
