Nikon 1 J1 VR 30-110mm Lens $202.95 Delivered, JB Hi Fi, Approx $100 Cheaper Than Other Oz Stock

20

Bought a refurb J1 from a previous deal ( https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/143134 ) and have been looking for a bigger zoom.

My wife tells me it's not the size that counts, it's how you use it….

But I'm a terrible photographer, so here we are.

$202 seems to beat amazon, ebay etc from overseas and comfortably beats staticice and other local retailers that have it around the $300 mark delivered.

Perhaps there's more good lens deals here too?

Are you sure she is talking about the lens? "My wife tells me it's not the size that counts, it's how you use it…."

    • Wow. Some people really don't get humour

I think he meant, It's not about the focal length of the lens but the size/girth of the sensor.

    • either way, I'm looking to improve my money shots.

  • While we are on the subject of small things, how are you finding the J1? I never got it due to the small sensor compared to other Micro Four Thirds.

I'm probably not the best reviewer, I'm no camera aficionado so can't really comment on sensors and comparisions…I just point it at things and fiddle with settings in a trial and error manner.
so far it has performed admirably at parties etc. (lowish light environments).

Seems to be a good compromise in terms of form factor- ie easy to whip out at a moment's notice.

In amongst all those entendres, I'm recommending it as a camera.

      • How about night time shots? i have one as well and i'm struggling to take shots at night. just gives me the red box and wont take a picture. Apart form that i love this camera.

        • If it's anything like the V1 (and I believe it's the same sensor), out of camera jpegs at high iso can be very noisy. However, if you shoot in raw and convert in post processing (jump on the free copy of DXO Optics Pro 7 deal) you can surprisingly get relatively noise free output.

In regards to AutoFocus, it depends on how dark you're talking about. Even the best DSLRs out there will have trouble focusing in very dark scenes.

        • well, you'll get serious problem take a night shoot using f3.5 unless you use higher ISO or slower shutter. get 18.5mm f1.8 and you'll get better picture without using too high ISO

Figure out what you want the lens to achieve, if you want it to zoom further then go for it. Other than that, there's not much more this lens offers compared to the kit lens. For $200 I think it's a bit much to fork out when you can just walk a few steps closer to the subject. Leaning how to operate your camera is a much better investment. Just because the lens is bigger, doesn't mean your photos are going to get any better.

Agreed. 30-110 is like 55-200 in DX, not much help. I got $150 last year from JB for my dad's V1
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/122194. It's better grab prime lens 18.5mm f1.8 than this one. Or grab ft-1 converter and you can have more selection of DX lenses to choose, even from third parties like sigma or tamron.

      • Bought a 30-110mm thinking it would be handy on my overseas holiday recently but never found a use for it. Sticked to 18.5mm which worked great in all situations

  • My 2c on this deal:

Whilst it's not the cheapest this lens has been from a B&M store, the 30-110 is one of the sharper zoom lenses in the Nikon 1 line up. In saying that, as with all lenses, the focal length/range must be useful for your purposes first. Changing lenses at the 30mm point is pretty annoying. For most people who want the 30-110mm and use the 10-30mm, it may be better to get the 10-100mm VR (non-PD version) to avoid changing lenses. 100mm and 110mm isn't much of a difference (about a step or two forwards). The 10-100 is sharper than the 10-30 at equivalent focal lengths and about as sharp as the 30-110.
