Anti Virus recomendations

Currenty, we are using Mcafee, thats up for renewal.

It will cost us $60 for a one year subscription for three licenses (protect three computers)

Is this a good price to be paying for the level of security they offer, or is there better out there, bang for buck.

I am interested to hear thoughts on this, from the more computer savy (which i am not) out there.

Thanks in advance for any replies moving forward.

    Microsoft Security Essentials, free

  • Bitdefender internet security 2015
Free from the amount of codes we get

    • that's free and a very good AV IMHO

  • https://www.malwarebytes.org/lp/pirates/ is 25 for 3 computers for 1 year (20 if u use a USA proxy thing)

Free is the price you should pay.

On different computers I have, Advast, Avira and AVG.

AVG would be my pick of the bunch.

Other people may prefer an A/V with a different letter of the alphabet.

AVG advertising is terrible now, takes over your PC.

it staggers me that people pay for antivirus when there are so many good well known free ones available.

My setup is MSE for windows 7. or the built in AV in windows 8. Complemented with Malwarebytes free version (scanner only, no real time shield) and then google chrome with ad block to stop idiot users from clicking every single pop up they see.

  • I am having trouble getting my head around the whole "free" thing…………….

I mean, what does the provder get out of offering their service for free??

And if what they offer for free, does it fall short of a service that actually costs $ by the consumer.

  • Check your antivirus or pick one from the list here at a respected independent testing site.

You can get Kapersky for $1 at MSY when you buy any hardware, maybe a cheap USB thumb stick. Generally I don't bother with anti-virus software, if you keep your browser and operating systems(besides XP)updated then you are pretty safe and won't slow down your system with continuously running in the background.

Yeah, I haven't been using anti-virus for 4 years. And nothing happened. I think it just need good habits, and that's all.

  • Should have bought the Norton for -$10 each! Still have 1600~ days left

  • I've been in IT support for years. I favour Norton's every time.

I have had to rescue people using so called Free Antivirus solutions for years. They tend to be top heavy (ie use lots of memory and processor)or have ads and can trick you into downloading other software.

Recently I have had people come to me with the federal police Ransome virus on their computers even though they have been using free or paid versions of AVG which supposedly are able to prevent this. All AV products are only as good as the latest update you download. A lot of the free versions only download new signatures once per day. The latest versions of Norton's poll the Symantec servers and will download updates as soon as they become available. You get what you pay for.

My advice is not to buy from high street retailers us you will pay too much. The last few versions of Nortons I have purchased has been from reputable dealers online / auction sites. eg. I purchased Norton 360 5 user for $35.
