Need a new printer from Dick Smith! Help!

Long story short; bought Epson ink from Dick a few weeks ago (using a voucher & sale code) but the printer died over the weekend and I hadn't even opened or used any of the ink. Went in to local Dick Smith today and they said they would take back the ink and put the credit towards a new printer in store. Ink cost $60 and don't wanna spend more then $100 on a printer. Looking at these two, anyone have any other thoughts or suggestions.

Needs to have WiFi built in and fairly fast, but otherwise no real criteria

  • Also have a look at http://www.dicksmith.com.au/multifunction-printers/canon-mx5…

I prefer the look of the WF2530, since it has a document feeder (good for scanning multiple pages) but other than that both look fairly run of the mill printers.

The WF series are for office use and the XP series are more optimied for colour photo prints.

I always question if people REALLY need a printer. My wife used to print her photo etc, but it cost a mint. Getting them printed online and having them posted is 10x easier and cheaper. The only things we ever need to print is the odd flight plan or something purely text based really. So I bought a laser printer. Exceptional mileage for the toner compared to Ink.

  • What are you going to print with them?
Lec notes: get an inkjet + ebay ink (grab the manufacturer code under consumables on the printer's official spec page), alternatively, B&W lasers work as well, but for the same price you can get colour notes. Up to you really, just don't buy inkjet ink from a retailer and the prices per print should be roughly the same. Downside is inkjet - you MUST print at least once every fortnight or ink will dry and accumulate on the printhead, causing you to need to flush the crap out of the nozzles wasting lots of ink (regardless if you use official ink or ebay ink).
Photos: Don't bother, as cypher said, get them printed online (wait for the free print offers on ozbargain).

    • Both my partner and I are students, so we need to be able to print a lot (lecture notes, assessments and those sort of things), but my partner does graphic design, so needs to be able to scan an image, touch it up on her laptop and then print it off again. But ye she prints photos for clients and work online and gets them shipped.

Didn't know about needing to print every fortnight so thanks for that. Would that be every colour?

      • Look at the HP, most of their printers have a permanent type ink, so no more issues like standard inkjets which run if you get the paper wet. Colour printing at around BW laser prices

To really save you can buy cartridges (counterfeit) from ebay. And ACCC rulings are that this does not automatically void warranty.

With price of ink/toner from any manufacturer and printing, a few refills later and you've saved more than the cost of a new printer anyway. That is IF you are unlucky. My 1 year old HP is working fine with cheap refills and my 5 year old unit (Canon) worked fine previously and was when I put it in storage.

If you are a little bit handy you can save more with refillable cartridges

Yes, I'm sure your lecture notes are nice and colourful enough haha :P, once a fortnight is just a rule of thumb, if you don't print for a month (like during uni breaks), you'll be risking having streaky prints (dried ink on printhead) the next time you use printer.

Multifunction Inkjets are fine with ebay/3rd party ink cartridges for that purpose

If I were you, I'd get a 2nd inkjet JUST for printing photos for clients OR find an affordable and reliable online printing service for the professional quality prints. Otherwise, you can look at the CISS systems, which are basically fake cartridges that have inklines attached to large external ink tanks/reservoirs, I know RIHAC make some, there's also much cheaper (looking at around $40) kits on ebay.

Cost-wise, CISS is like 10-20% cheaper than ebay ink cartridges, however there's a bit more fiddling to them for the initial setup, and they usually cost as much as a printer themselves for a set. Ink-quality wise, they claim to be on par with manufacturer's ink, however, I've never used one, as I prefer the no-fuss cheap ebay ink cartridges for my lecture notes :)
