Also, the reason why Samus in the early metroid games turned into a morphball when navigating crawlspaces was because the developers didn't have the skill to put in crouch and crawling postures or animations, so they simply had the protagonist turn into a rolling ball as it was much easier to animate within the limitations of 8-bit graphics.
