Broccoli $0.40/kg @ Coles Barkly Square (Brunswick Melbourne) or $2.30/Box

460

First post!
Was at coles this evening and thought I should contribute when I saw this deal!
Not sure when it ends. There were quite a lot of broccoli left.

Broccoli is expensive these days at 4-5dollars per kg so this is a steal.

Damn, it was 1.40 a kg at Oakleigh. They must have got a lot of stock.

    • at Oakleigh.

Did you get some baklava from Nikos at Oakleigh Quality Cakes…

    • Same price at cairnlea.

When I seen this post I felt like driving to brunswick and buying 10kgs, but fridge to small

Being Coles, it's probably from the 2013 crop…

      I prefer the 2011 vintage… :)

Yes, 2011 was a good year for broccoli…

Essences of burnt toast, sewer gas, garlic, onions, and a subtle hint of rotting cabbage.

Broccoli prices are all over the place. I recently saw $8/kg in Adelaide at Coles.

Lately it's been under $2/kg at Coles & Woolies. I love broccoli.
Sounds like they had too much on hand & it wasn't moving at $1.40. No one wants to have rotting brassicas on their premises!

    • Not woollies in qld. It's $5.

      • Less than $2 last week at local Brissie Woolies & $1.80 @Coles (now $1.40).

      • I saw it for $1.50 at Coles in Brisbane the other day, $1.70 at Woolies.

I hope everyone is aware that broccoli is a poison. Like many substances, however, it is the size of the dose of the active toxic ingredient which governs whether there may be negative effects.

Do not eat more than 30 kg of broccoli at a single sitting. Seriously. This may well provide enough sulforaphane to have severely negative consequences. (ie, possibly death)

Of course, it is also possible that eating 30 kg of anything at a single sitting may impact one somewhat adversely. More research needs to be done on this.

    • heh, funny but not true

I am playing it safe and am limiting myself to 30kg in my lifetime. And have broadened the definition of broccoli to anything which has a stalk.

      • mmm … lamb stalks

      • should've brodened the definition to >30kg

    • Eat heaps of carrots a day and you will see yourself turning orange. Its quite amusing.

    • Vile weed!

sparkley bear bringing out the sales

  • I buy frozen these days, usually fresher & cheaper. Works great for smoothies

    • Do you put them in the blender when still frozen or thaw first?

  • At 40c, it has probably sitting in the coolroom for a week or more and they needed to clear before it went bad / make room for new specials. Cheaper to sell it below cost than it is to fill a dumpster.

(10 years in supermarket produce. If something is ridiculously cheap, ask when it came in and inspect the quality. There's pick/pack dates on the crates.)

It was over $7/kg at my local coles yesterday… what a rip off!

  • Hrmmm I love broccoli. I normally buy from the markets they sell them for $1.29 for a bunch (if that is what you call broccoli) I normally scope out the biggest one with the smallest stem.
