Free Battery Change for some iPhone 5 Users

Moved to Forum: Original Link

Apple has determined that a very small percentage of iPhone 5 devices may suddenly experience shorter battery life or need to be charged more frequently. The affected iPhone 5 devices were sold between September 2012 and January 2013 and fall within a limited serial number range.

If your iPhone 5 is experiencing these symptoms and meets the eligibility requirements noted below, Apple will replace your iPhone 5 battery, free of charge.

Replacement process

As of August 22, 2014, the replacement process will be available in the U.S. and China. In other countries, it will be available as of August 29, 2014.

    Forums?

  • you can put your serial number in now though to check if your eligible

  • Is this a deal or a recall?

    • Recall

  • Tried my brother's iPhone 5 that he's selling me after his contract runs out (still using an iPhone 4, have no real reason to upgrade though) and his isn't eligible unfortunately. Would have been handy to get a new battery though :-P

  • The serial number you entered is not eligible under this program because either:
    - It's not one of the serial numbers in the affected range
    - Our records show that your battery has already been replaced. If you paid for a battery replacement service, check with Apple to see if you are eligible for a refund.

      I called the apple store.
They said the program start 29/8/2014.
Before that, they cant register me into the program…
This is what they said to me..

  • My iphone 5 dies at 40% battery life.
It only charges to 96% after leaving it charging overnight.

    This is not a deal!

    • +2

Why? It saves some people $100

The other apple deal with the dodgy lock button got me a free unit replacement

      • +1

It's a recall not a deal. Apple is fixing a fault in the phone.

    • To those with an Phone 5 it mav very well be, either report the post to the mods, or just leave it be

  • Got it replaced under one month ago for $99 and currently getting it refunded :D
Better not give me an iTunes Card!!!

It may not be a deal, but it is very good for iphone 5 users to know about this.

    • Sure, then post it in an iphone users' forum.

It's also very good for people to know that there are concession bus tickets available for students but this isn't the place to tell them about it.

Then deals for current AMEX holders shouldn't be posted in deals and kept to AMEX forums.

This can still be a deal for some.

        • +2

Amex are saving you money if you choose to purchase something, if you have one of their cards. So yes they are a targeted offer. However, this post, also a targeted offer, is informing current owners that they bought something with a fault and under law are eligible for a replacement. Comparing apples and oranges.

Thanks for the heads up. My i5 is eligible for a free battery! YAY

    • +2

So that means your phone had a fault and apple are fixing it, not that they are being nice and giving you a freebie.

  • +1

Thanks I am eligible for it as well

  • +3

No deal here, you're essentially only getting your statutory rights (reasonable expected time).

A recall for a defect is not a deal. Forums.

  • +2

Not technically a deal. More a recall

  • +1

Thanks for this! my iphone 5 is eligible!

  • +3

    TARGETED OFFER :)

maybe we should start posting car recalls as deals…

    • +3

Yeah I'm expecting a tonne of VW DSG and Toyota owners to start posting.

Thanks, I've been having battery problems and hopefully this will fix it. I was not aware of the replacement program.
The iPhone 5 serial number you entered is eligible for this program.

  • +2

Thanks, mine just started having issues and it's eligible. Wouldn't have known if I hadn't seen this.

Great. Having issues with the battery after 6 months. Took it to a apple authorised repair centre, they said battery is fine, as shown in their diagnostics!!!

Now it falls into those serials. Thanks for the post :)

  • Mine was just replaced when I took it in to get the shit cleaned out of my charging and headphone port. They did it under Australian Consumer Law - I didn't even have to ask.

  • I had my battery replaced for free at the chadstone apple store last week as I was having battery issues - I didn't even know about the program. I did buy my iphone during that period so I may very well have been eligible anyway. Guess it just means that you probably don't have to wait till 29th to get it replaced for free if you're having issues with an iphone 5 battery.

    Oh bloody hell.

Battery life was absolutely shocking on mine, wouldn't last a day and would switch off at 10-20%. So I bought a replacement on ebay and fixed it myself.
    Last week.

Now I find I'm eligible for a free switch.
Do you think Apple will know that I've changed them, if I put the old battery back in? Everything seems to be intact still inside.

    ARGHHH!!!!!!

  • battery life is pretty shit generally

Great! … went in a few weeks ago to complain about my battery dieing at 40% and they said its wear and tear! Thanks for saving me 90 bucks!

  • Well just got mine done, no dramas. Had to leave it there for 3 hours but still, win!

Oddly the screen seems to be a little bit out of place now. As in, I can compress it on one corner. Bah! Take it back in?

  • my wife's iphone goes from half full to empty in just a couple hours now. i have stumbled on the apple link (thanks google) and her phone's eligible… since this post exists i'm not gonna repost
