Bangkok

HI all,

I'm going to Bangkok for a week in late september by myself.
I don't know a lot about the country.

Can you recommend MUST DO things in the bangkok area?
I'd really like to go to the tiger temple but i'm not sure if its doable

Any help would be great

  • A little bit more information would probably help people give suggestions, age/gender/interests? Are you looking for night life or tourist attraction? What part of the city are you staying in? What type of budget are you on for the trip?

    • Righto - Im a 23yr old male student. I have no idea where i'm staying, my brother lives there are i'm crashing on his lounge.
Im into taking photos and eating. Having said that i'm not particularly against anything i'm willing to see/do everything.
I'm keen to sightsee/shop in the day and head out at night

      • I was there during the riots in Feb this year so my experience was probably a little different as most of the attractions in the city were very quiet. We pretty much did most of the big attractions in 1 or 2 days.

Don't visit the Zoo, it's pretty bad but other than that you can't go wrong really. Just for the experience you should check out Koh San Road, not too bad at night but pretty westernised. If red light is your thing then take a look at soi cowboy or nana plaza, soi cowboy is probably slightly better imo.

I visited MBK shopping centre and although we were rushed for time it was pretty good. Lookup 'MBK fight night' on facebook, its free (or very cheap for ringside seat) to see some fights.

Other than that you can't go too far wrong, you won't run out of things to do with only a week there.

I visited the tiger temple in Phuket but I'm sure there are ones near Bangkok that you can visit. If food is your thing I would book a full day tour that some places offer, oh and check out the floating markets!

Here you go, some good blanket travel advice, regardless of interests.

    Wiki Travel - http://wikitravel.org/en/Bangkok
    Trip Advisor - http://www.tripadvisor.com.au/Tourism-g293916-Bangkok-Vacati…

  • This site was very good untill the owned passed away, and the site was taken down. Here is an archive from 2013 - http://web.archive.org/web/20130129174730/http://www.phuket-…

  • Ok a bit more advice seeing as this is ur 1st thai trip.

Pack light, take the maximum size for carry on bag & forget about checked luggage.

Dress light, dont even think about needing more than what u would wear to the beach on a hot day - so shorts, shirt, thongs, (sunnies / hat) is ALL u need day or night.

Buy clothes over there (so u can bring some home, about $5 shirt/shorts, and alot is cheap crap so u have to shop around), this means taking less with u so u can bring more home.

Forget about jeans, jackets or shoes, u just look like a tourist and u will be uncomfortable and hot. Only exception would be really fancy night clubs may have a dress code, most are happy with thongs / shorts / singlets.

As for BKK, u will have alot of fun. Very crowded, very polluted, but still alot to offer. As for sleeping on ur bros lounge, a decent hotel should only cost $40 a night.

If u dont like the heat, the city basically never sleeps, so u can assume vampire mode and get ur sleep in the day, and party from 11pm —> 4am etc. The nightlife tends to start late in Thailand, as alot of the locals dont go out till around 11pm. This may be a bit different in BKK based on the volume of people, but no doubt the nightlife peaks alot later than oz.

    • Thank mate, i appreciate the effort

If into Computer/electronics shopping/window shopping then Pantip Plaza is good. (Google it)
A fantastic trip taking about 2 hours is taking a long tailed boat to the orchid farm from Saphan Taksin (there is a big ferry terminal below the skytrain station) Lots of touts there. If you fight hard you can get it for 1800 baht. Do not pay more than 2,000 baht (Stick to it, they will give in) for one private long tail boat (you can have any no. of people) At the orchid farm get out, have a walk around, and have a drink. It is not the orchid farm, but the actual trip that is the fantastic attraction. And on the way back you stop 20 minutes at Wat Arun (Temple of the Dawn) You have to pay a berthing fee about 50 baht at Wat Arun and an entry fee - not sure maybe 100 baht. The driver will come back for you in 20 minutes. At the end of the trip, Tip the Long tail boat driver 50 - 100 baht.
If you go to the Grand Palace/Emerald Buddha area, absolutely assume that anyone outside who talks to you is lieing to you and/or scamming you. 100% scum bags hang around outside. They do all sorts of things, from mis-directing you to telling you that the palace/temple is closed etc. etc. If they say that they are from the Thai tourist authority, DO NOT BELIEVE THEM. I never take tuktuks either. A lot are scammers, and a lot are an overpriced way of breathing in a lot of pollution. Aircond taxis is the way to go. Mostly meter fare. Some will ask for fixed price, but I usually refuse.

    • hahahahahhah thanks for looking out
