Camera around $400

Can anyone recommend a camera around $400?
It's for a gift and I'm completely out of my depth.
Used mainly for stills/documenting artwork. Would be a bonus to have a HD recording fuction, but not a deal breaker.
Can be DSLR or mirrorless, though portability isn't a huge factor. Just want good shots.

Any suggestions?

    I'll suggest the Sony RX100, there are currently 3 versions since its initial model 3 years ago.
    It is a pricy camera though, the first make is your best chance to get it around $400. don't be fooled that because it is the first model it is therefore "out of date tech" it is a camera NOT a phone, it still takes shots that are amazing compared to other point and shoot cameras.

        a5000 is a class and a half above the RX100, but at $400 you would still need to pay another $600-$900 for a lens anywhere close to RX100's built in one.
