Jeep Grand Cherokee vs Nissan Juke

hi all, new to Australia and looking at purchasing a new car. im from the Berwick area and have sourced two cars; http://www.berwickchryslerjeep.com.au/new-vehicles/new-jeep-… and http://www.berwicknissan.com.au/juke

being new to the country not sure how much to haggle on each vehicle. is there a percentage or custom figure?

also wondering if you have anything positive to say about either dealer or if I should be looking elsewhere.

Small SUV vs Large(ish) SUV. I think you should go back to the drawing board and see what you need/want. Having said that I see no good reason to buy the Juke. It's ugly and expensive for it's size.

  • after a 4wd (I know that much, not the large version ie/ pajero), something that will last and not hit the hop pocket in the long run, budget of $35000. ideally not wanting to be ripped off by a dealer, knowing that the price im paying is pretty good.

You must have meant Cherokee not Grand Cherokee since the "grand" is pajero size. When you say 4WD what sort of applications did you mean? Because obviously a juke is not a true off roader

something that will last and not hit the hop pocket in the long run…

IME you don't want a Jeep then.

what is your saying here 'Toorak mum' or something of that ilk. after a 4wd for city driving, after comfort and safety.

The way to judge safety is by comparing ANCAP scores. There's this popular idea that 4wds are as a class innately safer, but it's not always true. The Jeep Grand Cherokee isn't a particularly safe car. I don't get why people want to buy giant cars for city driving? They're unsafe and irritating for everybody around you. Buy smaller, more fuel efficient, and more feature rich cars? The Holden Cruze is probably the best value car in Australia right now, and is a perfect city car.

No ANCAP scores are not the best way to judge safety. For a start they are relative, which means a 5 star Barina is nowhere near as safe as a 5 star 4wd. Cars are only scored based off their performance compared to other cars of similar size. In reality physics takes over, and the more metal around you, the safer you are in a crash. If you look at real world crash figures (fatalities per 1000 accidents), the safest cars are generally Range Rovers, Mercedes E class and Jaguars. All big and heavy cars.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee, on initial release, only got a 4 star rating in ANCAP testing, owing mostly to a roll over issue. This was addressed in the 2014 WK2 models, which overseas have been tested to 5 star standards. The original Grand Cherokee WK1 did fail the famous mouse test, when it was overladen, but the current model passed with flying colours.

The reason smart people buy large 4wds is because they are priced (in this country) much more competitively than sedans. It is a no brainer to buy one.

The Holden Cruze might be a perfect city car for you, but most people see it for what it really is, a crumby rebadged Daewoo. It is underpowered, unsafe and generally cheap and nasty. If you like hard touch plastics and an interior straight from 1988, then it is a car for you.

so if I continue my search for my vehicle at dealers, im assuming haggling is part of the process and if so what are we looking at. if they say $35,000 will I look like an idiot for offering $28,000

    • +1

If I can't negotiate a cheaper deal myself directly with the dealer, I usually find the cheapest new price on carsales or drive etc for the car I like in my state, then hit the local dealer with that price.

      • and do you find dealers are generally receptive towards this. might try it this weekend if that's the case

        • Yep, once they are faced with the realisation that another dealer is offering the same car at a lower price then they usually capitulate…they might try to squirm a bit with value-adding some overpriced accessories, but if you stick to your guns & be prepared to walk if they won't play the game, you'll get a win. :)

@StewBalls: exactly. "Hi car sales guy. I have this ad (and have confirmed over the phone) for the same car for $xxxxx. I'm happy to go there to save $xxxx. Unless you can beat that price, and then you'll have a sale."

          It usually works.

  • You have zero chance of getting a Grand Cherokee for $35k. The cheapest 4*4 version you can get will set you back just under $50k. It is obviously a much better car than a Nissan Juke.

    • The Hyundai ix35 is better than the Nissan Joke.

  • Go in to dealers at the start of the month and get a price guide, then go into other dealers on the last weekend of a month and haggle. They always have targets they need to hit and more flexible on price. New cars dont have a great deal of wiggle room, every dealer has the same car and know what other dealers charge. Better value can be found getting higher models for cheaper or extras thrown in.

Personally I have found jeeps to be terrible cars and not reliable.

The link below has a good idea on the SUVs under $45. I personally love the Forrester but each to their own.

The Forester has a CVT gearbox and you are recommending it over a jeep with the 8 speed ZF?

      • I've got friends that have had or got jeeps, all of them have had a major mechanical issue of some sort. I'm into my 3 Forrester and never had any issues, just good times. Like I said, Personally based on my experiences, I pick forrester

Good for you, but I think you will find that Fiat Chrysler has really raised their game recently. The OP can't afford a Grand Cherokee, but it is a much better car than any Subaru. All Subarus are 20 year old technology, they are essentially the same car as they were in the late 1990s. The sole technological advancement is the CVT gearbox, which is a big step in the wrong direction. Jeeps are up to date in terms of tech, especially the GC and the new Cherokee, years ahead of Subaru. And I own a Subaru, its not very good.

        • @maybeamacy:
was going to post that link too…I also have a friend who has had a very poor experience with Jeep. I like the Nissan engineering…but not a fan of the Juke. Do they still do the Pathfinder - that has quite a good heritage…probably a bit more expensive tho.

The Juke is so ugly but I'd still take that over a JEEP any day of the week.

    • -1

The Jeep Grand Cherokee was co engineered with Mercedes Benz, and shares the chassis with the Mercedes ML and GL classes. It also has the best auto gearbox and the market and a series of strong engines. It is a very good car. Much better than the Juke.

the Grand Cherokee is reportedly the most popular SUV in Australia at the moment, according to reviews — that probably translates into a sustained resale value, barring any major recalls for defects in the near future.

If you value style, the current model Jeep is the winner, but Nissan has better technology options than the rest of the SUV market — although features like (Park Assist \ Around View® Monitor \ Blind Spot Warning \ Lane Departure Warning \ Moving Object Detection) may not be available on the budget-priced Nissan Juke — those safety options would eclipse all the current requirements for the ANCAP ratings.

  • When it comes to reliability the American cars don't come close to the Japanese cars and that's a statistical fact. The top for reliability are Mazda with Subaru, Toyota and Honda not far behind. If you're looking for a reliable and economical SUV in your price range I wouldn't be going pass the CX5.

    • I would have put Honda at the top of the list of Jap reliability, then Nissan & Toyota duking it out for 2nd spot (I think Toyota are more reliable, but Nissan engineering is better)…Mazda the cars look alright but I hear lots of horror stories about their service…Mitsubishi make great (pick anything that isn't a car).
