Why is petrol so cheap at the moment? (Adelaide)

It's been under $1.35 for the last fortnight or so now, every day I have driven past various servos expecting the price to skyrocket by 20cpl for no good reason as it usually does every 8-10 days, but it hasn't. I have resorted to topping up my car and motorbike pretty much daily now, to protect myself against the usual price-cycle-hike, but it just hasn't happened.

I am scared that this will mean we are in for a massive artificial spike that stays high for more than the usual 8-10 days :(

  • grab a 44 gallon drum, syphon your car and fill up again.

    We are subsidising you :)

    $1.52 a litre here (Sunshine Coast,Qld)

(i should say we have been down in 1.40 ish range 2 weeks ago approx)

I filled up in Brisbane last week at $1.36 a litre.

        ditto

  • My housemate and I actually have probably 10 large jerry cans (not sure how big they are, probably 15-20 litres each?) that we were tempted to lug across the road to fill up. But then, I literally only use a tank of petrol every 6 weeks or so (hardly ever drive my car, and usually ride my motorbike these days) so we considered there might be too much of a risk of the fuel spoiling before we used it all, not to mention the danger of storing ~100 litres of petrol under a common roof (two-storey townhouse).

His fiance is back from Perth this week actually and was complaining about how petrol never seems to go below $1.55 over there these days.

Price was sitting at around $1.40 in Melbourne for about 10 days. I suspect (a) the petroleum companies are playing mind games with the publica and (b) possibly there are competitive pressures in the market at the moment. When prices went up I noticed that United (in my area) took a full day to follow the others. Then a couple of independents in my area dropped their prices again within days while the "Big Boys" are still holding to the top of cycle prices.
Topping up when the price is down is a good stratey…….

Price where I am in Sydney sat at $1.37 (Woolies Caltex) for over a week last week, too. Weirded me out lol. Then I drove a few minutes up north and found a Woolies Caltex selling at $1.33.

A couple of days ago it jumped back up to $1.57. Sigh. It was a good run while it lasted.

last night Melbourne was 1.51 - woolies in Tarneit/Hopper crossing area

although I was expecting it to go down as there was a news of global Oil concerns easing due to some reasons

    It's almost annoying! :-)
I keep topping up and then the price drops again!
We went away for the weekend, so I topped up my work car on Friday Night assuming it would skyrocket and come home to find it's 2cpl cheaper!

  • $1.30 isn't cheap. Price could go up to $1.80 tomorrow and then they bring it down to $1.60 and we will be having the same discussion about how petrol is cheap at the moment.

  • Bass Hill NSW Caltex $1.325 for E10 and $1.455 for ULP 95 and seems to be decreasing weekly.

I'm keeping close tabs using their app, love it!

  • its $95 a barrel which is a long time low

  • Vehicle overtook me the other day (Van)-thought that smells like fish n chips, then i was reading that you can run a diesel on used oil from the fast food industry :)

    Only time i wished i had a diesel…

"Cheap' is relative. Oz petrol is inexpensive compared to most other nations (e.g., UK over $2 a litre). If you take away all the tax and tax (GST) and tax (excise) on our petrol, then the price is very favourable. Try buying bottled water for the price of petrol - but that's another story for another day

That one always amuses me - we all complain about the price of petrol, but bottled water is more expensive per litre usually (and we pay it too). lol

  • International crude price is going down.

  • As predicted, looks like prices have been hovering around $1.45 for well over a week now, with no sign of dropping. (profanity) petrol companies.
