Would this student card be accepted by transit officers?

Hello
I finished university and had been cleaning out my closet of notes and textbooks. I found my old student card that does not have the travel sticker on it. In the situation of transits coming on the bus and checking my id, would they accept the card? And do they actually double check if i actually still attend the university?

They won't take it. My international student friends have been fined because they're missing a sticker. Their cards are otherwise identical to local students' cards.

The Holographic sticker is what they check for. Remember that international students and part time students are not eligible for concession travel and do not get the holographic stickers, so Transport Officers use this to differentiate between students who are eligible and those who are not.

You will be fined since you don't have a 2014 sticker.

Congratulations on finishing Uni, and welcome to the rat race…. that means no more student tickets too :(

You won't get concession fares for transport if you do not have the sticker or hologram.

But hey, your student card is valid until 2017, so enjoy the concession tickets for art gallery, cinema etc until then :)

Yes!! Definitely the best way to use the card =)

Although with cinemas I hope you know by now to either use optus or telstra reward tickets =)

      • "I hope you know by now to either use optus or telstra reward tickets =)"

Or just go to ones that are cheaper than those prices to start with. Plenty of cinemas under the Telstra/Optus ticket prices. (2 out of 4 near me are under $10)

Interesting student card. What's the deal with the Mastercard bit? Back in my day (which wasn't even that long ago lol), student cards were plain and boring - no chips or anything like that one. How do you use it? Preload cash onto it to use on campus?

    I'm fascinated lol.

Back in my day , almost a decade ago, you could upload money onto your student card and use it to pay for printing.

      • +2

Derp, you're right, ours could do that too lol. Forgot about that feature. It wasn't a mastercardy job though..

You can deposit cash onto the card through Macquarie uni's Commonwealth bank branch or the Macquarie Centre Commonwealth bank branch in person.. or transfer money to the account through another bank and basically use it as a debit card anywhere not just on campus :)

I smell an overlooked business opportunity for counterfeiters…

There was on documentary on the ABC some time ago that covered faked products emanating from China - in all their disturbing 'glory' - including car and aircraft components (some that had resulted in terrible crashes), and medicines.

In some cases, both the packaging and the counterfeit holographic seals on fake drugs products were so good that even drug-company security teams couldn't identify them as being dodgy.

Even as the focus of attention for transit officers, less than perfect stickers would probably do the job. For a small fee, and maybe even for a substantial one, I'm sure that there exists around the world a veritable army of people keen on being reborn as concession-card holders…

      Would definitely buy

OP, I was reticent to bluntly imply, but did have a gut-feeling that it you might be one the 'Army of the Keen'…

I remember that one. Good doco! Was it this one? (and part 2)

      • I don't recall it being it two parts, but if it's the one that covers in some detail the (Air Alaska, I think) flight that crashed because counterfeit rivets only had 30% shear-strength relative to spec - that will probably be the one.

Good morning little turnip. If you really were in any way traumatised by the spider business, genuine apologies.

        • I'll have to re-watch it again. Not sure if the one I linked has anything about Air Alaska so it could be a different one (one great thing about having a terrible memory is being able to watch docos several times and still have it feel like completely new to me lol). The one linked has an amusing yet sad snippet of a guy in China who can "knock off a van Gogh in 40 minutes" - narrated while the guy is painting one of my favourites, which blows my little mind a bit. He gets paid $1 per painting. Crazy. Just makes you realise how people with genuine talent are kind of forced into this life of 'exploiting' (ie. counterfeiting) and being exploited in return, just to survive. Imagine if they channelled that energy into wonderful new ideas of their own.

re: the spider story - not really traumatised. Grossed out beyond words, yes, but I'll be okay lol. It has ruined the word "chunks" for me, though. Forever.

        • There was another documentary, entirely about an English guy who was the absolute scourge of European auction houses. He/his family had a very long career of inserting one amazing knockoff after another into the hands of dealers and beyond. Relentless.
The title eludes, but you would also be compelled by the deft-to-theft artistic talent on display in that doco. I certainly was.

If it's any consolation, sensitive, purple-blushed one, courtesy of the charming expression: 'throwing …', the 'ch' word was also ruined for me. I haven't looked at a tin of 'pineapple ch….' quite the same way, since.

    • There are quite a few fake Nintendo games being sold on ebay. Hard to tell which are the fakes sometimes so we dont buy any from ebay anymore. Would think a big company like Nintendo woutkd be working harder to stop the fakes on ebay. Whether they work well or not they are a rip off and you wouldn't want to sell them on later either.

no it's not valid for concession rail tickets. needs to be a 2013 sticker.

    • 2013 lol

Shhh, don't tell him! It's important that we do not disturb the psyches of our human time slip experiments. They must be led to believe the world is actually 1 year younger than it actually is or time paradoxes may occur.

      • lol oops. be nice! i wrote it at 2am

  • Sticker is must otherwise you will get a ticket by transit officer.

Your card is a 2012 card, most likely that it won't be accepted. I've had friends be refused concession tickets by the human ticket seller because they had the previous year's sticker on their student card, and others have copped a fine for purchasing concession tickets through the machine and not being able to prove they are a student in the current year.

My advice - buy the full-fare ticket and don't risk being fined for trying to save a few bucks.

  • What you should have done is enrolled in 6 random units for the year. Get the sticker from student connect, then withdraw from the units through estudent.

  • OP's Question: "would they accept the card?"

    Community's Answer: "No"

Asking for concession that you are not entitled to is inappropriate. Thread closed.
