Anyone used a Gerni Drain and Tube cleaner or similar?

Drain is blocked. Most probably tree roots. Have had it unblocked twice in the past by plumbers using water jets. Seemed so easy when the plumber did it, just fed the water jet down the access pipe that leads to the main sewer, and whoosh it was unblocked. $250 for 30 minutes work.

Anyway a while ago bought a Gerni that came with a 15m drain cleaner. Tried feeding it down the access pipe, hit the bottom (less than 2m down) and that's as far as I get. I can't seem to get it into the bend where it's blocked. Anyone used one of these and had success? Any pointers? Wanna give this a good go before calling the plumber out.

  • its a bit late but may be helpful to others. Pull the drain cleaner hose back and forwards a few times and twist it as you go. The cleaner hose will have a bit of a curve when you store them coiled and the twisting can can help it to get around corners etc as it goes in a different direction with each twist.

You may also have found your blockage, try coming at it from the opposite direction if you can and once cleared go back from the original direction as you may now be able to get in!

If its roots, you may need a spinny/auger type thing which you may need a plumber for. The pipe cleaner will manage sand dirt and small rocks organic matter/papaer etc but roots will win every time

  • May as well update, ended up buying a 4000 psi petrol pressure washer (eBay) plus drain cleaner hose and nozzles from Amazon (much cheaper than eBay). Set me back about $600 all up. Cleared the blockage and been using one rootox tablet a month. So far so good. The Gerni didn't have enough pressure to clear the blockage, just stirred it up a bit and it would be blocked again the following week.

    • I've heard copper sulphate is good for clearing roots also.?

  • Yep, Rootox are actually just copper sulphate tablets.

    • Do you flush them down toilet?

  • That's what the instructions say but I've got an access point closer to the roots.
