Good gaming router/modem for PS4 and 3DS XL

In preparation for the PS4 I'm going to buy in the morning, I'm also looking to upgrade my router. I will need it to work with Nintendo 3DS XL online games as well, specifically Mario Kart 7. I'm currently running a Technicolor TG582N from Telstra which has known issues with online gaming.

Hoping to spend around $100 max so was considering an older model ASUS (RT-N56U). The ASUS ones seem to be pretty highly rated for gaming but I don't really need the AC wireless in the new models. Plus I also already have an Apple Airport Time Capsule with AC wireless so could even go for a wireless model, might even be better so there's not as much interference.

Has anyone got any thoughts or recommendations? Especially from someone who is already running a PS4 or 3DS XL. If it works well straight out of the box without needing to port forward that would be a bonus, after working with the TG582N I am already having nightmares.

Thanks in advance.

  • I have a 3ds xl, and I've never had problems with it under any internet connection - keeping in mind the following:
    - You need a good quality wifi strength. It seems to suffer with a poor quality signal.
    - It only works with standard personal wifi security, not a "enterprise" radius solution.

Based on that, the asus will probably work fine for you. Just make sure you're gaming in an area with strong signal.

No experience with a PS4, but when gaming on my laptop, I get the best results with something on a 5ghz band… Simply because I am the only one in the area with 5ghz gear. There's about 30 odd networks on 2.4ghz and it can fight if you're doing something latency sensitive. The asus router will support it, but it seems like the PS4 doesn't… I have never had to adjust the port forwarding options for games… I'd suggest that there was something suss with the game or the router if you had to.

    • Yeah the 3DS XL can connect to the internet no problems, download updates and buy games etc, modem just won't allow it to play games online. Nobody with that model modem has been able to get it to work and looks like the PS4 might have the same issues.

  • I'm with optus and they replace the modem with a newer, better one if there's any problems. one time when I called up they said they knew the model I had was problematic, after replacing it my connection is heaps better.
Get Telstra involved, your modem is too old. Tell them the connection is dropping out for your devices. (with Optus it's free to replace the modem and they do it on short notice too.)

Are you actually having issues with your current set up? It seems excessive to me to spend $100 on something you might not need.
I'd say try it out first before wasting money.

    • Hey yeah good idea I'll try Telstra. It was only $30 for the modem when we signed up and works fine for everything else, never drops out. Maybe they will give me $30 towards another one at least.

It might work with the PS4 but it has known issues with 3DS XL online games as it can't really do DMZ mode. Bit of an issue as I really wanted to play Mario Kart 7 online and Super Smash Bros 3DS when that comes out.

  • Hey, you should have a look at billion modem/routers - theyre highly regarded on whirlpool forums.
The 7800NXL should fit your needs. Its around $130 http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=billion+780…

I have the 7800VDPX which is the same except for added dual band/voip and it runs great, strong connection, syncs at a higher speed than the bundled telstra modem.

No need to mess around with ports and stuff. I game on steam,ps4,ps3 and xbox 360 - no issues at all. Plus if youre into Netflix/Hulu Plus youre able to change the dns settings to get around the region blocking - I remember my telstra router not being able to do that.
