Possum in the roof

Hello fellow OzBargainers,

I have a possum problem in the roof. I have climbed and checked and blocked (i think) every possible entry points. But it IS still there at nights. We here the noise.

I went into the roof cavity in daytime and I could not find/see the possum.
Is it hiding from me?

I will be on a mission this weekend again, going after him/her trying to find him/her and close off any opening I can see.

Any OzBargainer advise very welcome. Please help !!

:(

Thanks

Any chance you live near Toowoomba, QLD? There's a free possum repeller for pick up out there.

  • No, this is Melbourne metro, Pascoe Vale

  • If it's in the roof and you close off all the openings, it won't be able to get out. Which may result in a smelly ex-possum.

Have you got any nestboxes in the trees around your house? They provide alternative accommodation for the possum to move into:

Also, are you sure it's a possum (do you get possums around your yard?) You might just have mice scurrying around up there.

lol you need to let it get out :) you might well have a stinking mess up there very soon which will be much worse than a bit of running or hissing.

possums are nocturnal - they go out in the evening and sleep during the day

there are also able to crawl in to very narrow and inaccessible spaces such as wall cavities.

i would unblock everything, determine their entry/exit point (shine a flashlight on to the roof in the early evening) and then block everything once you are sure they outside (visual confirmation).

alternatively you could buy a large cage trap and bait it with a banana and then relocate it to another area.

  • Couldnt find it?
Obviously not using a Cree Q5
    You do have a Cree Q5 right? (-;

go to this forum: Snake In My Roof and ask Jumpo to send you his Snake

That green tree snake is getting a lot of gigs. Jumpo could be making some good money on the side by renting out his new friend.

    • he's obviously not Hollywood if he's not going to exploit it of all it's worth

  • Be quick about getting it out. After the possums move in (May have babies up there), the rats take the oppo to get in too. They are much harder to get out.

  • Go to a pest control firm and ask to have a possum trap. Relocate the possum/s to a wooded area as required.

  • Make sure it is a possum and not rats, they can be noisy.

I had a possum in the roof recently, confirmed it by putting an IP wireless infrared camera up there and keeping an eye on it from the computer when I heard it moving.

Most councils have a possum trap that you can borrow or hire, be aware though it is illegal to relocate them to a new area although you can take them to a vet to be euthanased.

That's horrible just let it go and seal your roof you don't need to kill it.

When you do put it back in the bush give it a home to live in

  • I would invest in one of these. Put an apple in it and set it where you think they are getting into the roof. You will have a positive result within a couple of nights. Laws differ from state to state, but in Queensland you are permitted to use a trap if they are living in your dwelling and relocate them up to 50 meters away, but must be done within 24 hours of being caught and released the following night. Please check your state laws, but a friend had caught around 50 of them on his property and relocated them. They can be a pest when you have fruit trees everywhere.

If you have rats, peanut butter on rat traps will catch them. These traps can be bought cheaply from Bunnings.

You'll save heaps on doing it yourself.:)

The friendliest way to get a possum out of your roof is to brightly light the inside of your roof cavity. Possums don't like brightly lit places. Hopefully you have a couple of portable fluoro work lights or similar, which you can temporarily install up there? Make sure that the possum can get out of the roof, then wait until late in the evening and the possum has left for its night time forage - turn the lights on. When it comes home it won't want to enter the brightly lit roof and will find somewhere else to sleep. Repeat for several nights until you don't hear the possum THEN seal up the roof so it can't come back. WARNING make sure you don't use lights that get too hot and could start a fire!

  • Thank you all.
My roof cavity is lit up like day time (by two (20W + 11W) compact fluorescent bulbs) since Friday afternoon.
But, it was there again last night.
As soon as I heard it I climbed up, there was nothing. I thought possums wouldn't run away like rats.
Only if I could find where and how it gets in there…

  • Invest in a trap and they'll be caught within a few nights.
