Depends entirely on your requirements and situation.

    What are your priorities?

    -Low/no annual fee?
    -Sign on bonus?
    -Ability to earn virgin points?
-Amex direct issued cards or bank issued?
-Other perks that may offset the fee

I'll take a stab in the dark that you're after an no fee amex issued amex to capitalise on all the statement credit offers that keep coming up.

Aside from the cards that direct earn into qantas (any of the qantas amexes, and notably the david jones cards) all amexes should be able to earn you velocity points, either directly (like velocity rewards cards) or via transfers from Amex Membership Rewards to Velocity at 1:1

Free candidates are the velocity rewards $0 card you linked, the BMW gold ascent credit card (also $0) and the amex platinum rewards card ($0 first year, $80 years afterwards) which earns 2 points per dollar for petrol and supermarkets)

If you're happy to swallow the annual fee, then the platinum edge ($195) earns 3 points/$ at supermarkets, 2 points/$ for petrol and comes with a free virgin domestic flight each year, which may offset the annual fee depending on your flying patterns.

If it's not necessary to be an amex issued card, then the ANZ rewards platinum & black ($0 in the first year) comes with 50,000 anz rewards points (approx 22k velocity points) and the attached amex earns 3 anz points (= 1.33 velocity points) per dollar i.e. a better standard rate than the majority of the amexes above.

The NAB velocity cards costs $65 (standard) / $140 (premium) and comes with 20,000/40,000 velocity points & have a 1:1 (standard) 1:1.5 (premium) earn rate on the amex.

    • Thanks very much for the constructive advice @jlien - very helpful.
