How to embed srt files (sub titles files) into videos?

Hi Guys

Just a small question. I normally download movies from Internet and also corresponding srt file ( sub titles files ) and watch the Movie on VLC Player on my Laptop. That way, it plays sub titles along with the Movie.

Just wondering how do I embed this srt file into Movie so I can copy the Movie and play it in my DVD player or directly on my SMART TV via USB device.

If I simply copy both movie+srt file into a folder on USB, my DVD player or TV wont play sub titles. Hence, I had to use my VLC PLayer on Laptop.

Is there any way, I can get the sub titles also to play along with the Movie?

Pls ,, any suggestions here ?

  • Make sure the srt file and the movie have the exact the same name. Otherwise the TV won't read.

    • Mate, I tried this way. It wont work on my SMART TV.

  • You can use Handbrake to burn the subs in.

    • Thx rover.. I used Handbrake to burn the video+srt file and it plays well in VLC if I enable the sub title track. Will it also play with sub titles in my SMART TV directly the moment I connect it? ( I am away to test it anyway )

Just wondering if I should be doing something else? Any settings?

  • Random question, can you burn the subtitles to the top of the video? That way you could use VLC to display another set of subtitles, therefore being able to watch a movie with three different languages (audio + 2 subtitle files)

  • Seems like a lot of work… Just get a media player - heaps easier. I have the Boxee from years ago and still works a treat - I don't even need to download the subtitles beforehand. When you watch something you can use the media player to download subtitles for you (even sync'd ones) - and there's generally an array of different languages and duplicates. Otherwise, get a HDMI cable streaming to TV (or stream it somehow).

    • or, you could just buy the movies… :)

  • a simple method is just to set up a desk top as your home theater center. and connect it to your smart TV. all your problem should be solved. :)

    • Not a great IDEA as this involves investment to get a desktop and additional room space to set up the setup :-(
I'm looking for simple solutions which doesn't involve investing

  • Try the subtitle button on your remote.. it can do wonders sometimes =)Specially when you have followed the first comment on this thread.
