Which SSD to choose? Need help replacing the HDD in my MBP.

Hey all,

For some background information on my questions, please see another thread: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/156250

Now wanting to know what everyone recommends as a SSD upgrade (from a dead HDD) for an older (2011/2012) MacBook Pro. No gaming, but I do use some programs that like to eat up the usage, such as SPSS for statistics. I'm leaning towards something in the 250 GB range, but please feel free to suggest why I may need more (or less).

I have my eye on these at the moment:

Thanks!

  • All 3 you identify will be fine, and will perform identically for your use case. Buy the cheapest.

Unless you are short of cash, buy a drive a little bit bigger than your current usage; it will make your life simpler.

    • I have no idea what my current usage would be…

This is for an older computer that would have had the stock HDD…what would that have been?

Also have a MB Air, but again, not sure of the storage. Also stock I think, but upgraded RAM if that matters.

      • Those Macs would have had a few options for stock HDD. But in any case you might be using much less.

The number you want is "Used". Get an SSD bigger than that. And pay someone to install it for you.

        • Why do you think someone should install it for me?

        • @grovesy15:

I would guess he believes you are a bit illiterate with computers given you didn't know your usage. If your computer illiterate, you shouldn't be pulling one apart to replace parts.

          But thats my guess.

        • @heywes:

          Do you have a MBP?

  • Evo.

  • Thanks for all the feedback. I really appreciate the help, and would love some more input.

  • I was told that the pro is the most reliable one in terms of build and the 5 years warranty. Shopping express had them on sale not to long ago (I bought a 256gb for $159+free shipping) so it might be worth waiting for a sale.

  • I just bought the 500 GB Samsung Evo for my 2011 MBP. It's waiting for me to drop by the office so I can start the transfer and installation process.

  • All the above sound like good choices. A few months ago I installed a Sandisk Extreme II in my MBP, couldn't be happier. Remember to enable TRIM support for the SSD, my suggestion is Trim Enabler http://www.cindori.org/software/trimenabler/
