By "intersection", do you mean you entered the actual intersection on yellow, or you crossed the 'stop line' on yellow? And where were you when the light went red?
Shouldn't make a difference, AFAIK the red light cameras should only activate after the light has turned red.
Crossing the 'stop line' isn't the same as passing the sensor or entering the actual intersection.
They will give you the photos if they decide to fine you. If the light is yellow, then you're in the clear. That said, I have been flashed a few times in error and never gotten a fine.
Were you at least smiling?
I was in a state of shock my ozbargain life flashed before my eyes all i could think about was all the eneloop batteries I could purchased with that money
If you went through the lights at amber at peak, there would have been at least 3 cars behind you which triggered the flash.
You certainly describe a near death experience.
Hope it turns out OK for you
You may have had your front wheels over on yellow but rear wheels over on the red.
Alright so judging by what everyone is saying I should be good
Instantly flashed as soon i passed the solid white line coming into the intersection even though it was still on yellow and continued to be yellow past the 3/4 mark
Assuming the solid white line is the 'stop line', then that's not the line you need to be concerned about.
Beyond this is the intersection (past the pedestrian crossing if there is one). If the photo shows you entering the actual intersection on red, then you may be fined.
But the camera may have been triggered by someone from the other direction, or maybe just flashing as some have experienced.
There's not much point worrying at this stage, except to keep in mind you need to stop on yellow.
Just sing the song "don't worry be happy" ……
I recon you are done. The cameras will only activate if you have crossed over the sensor, several seconds after the light turns red. Having said that, the flashing may have been cause by a speeding car going in the same direction as you, possibly in the next lane over.
It is still illegal to enter an intersection on a yellow btw.
Got done by a cop once but everyone does it!!!!
Not quite. It's an offence not to stop at a yellow light if it's safe to do so.
The yellow light timing is set to allow someone to stop safely before the lights turn red. At the speed limit in a 60km/h zone with a 4 second yellow time, you could be 66 metres away and just make it before the red - however, you should be able to safely stop within 66 metres.
A traffic light turning yellow shouldn't be a surprise to anyone, it happens all the time. People should know how far it takes to bring their car to a stop. When approaching an intersection people should be alert for other vehicles, slow down if necessary and be prepared they may need to stop. Once they pass the safe stopping threshold, they should be well within the "yellow time" buffer.
If a huge big intimidating truck is riding your bumper as you approach the intersection, you slow down in preparation in case the lights change. You don't drive through on the red claiming it wasn't safe to stop.

Unless you live in America.

Happened recently in Victoria too - the yellow time at eight intersections was "found to be inconsistent with Austroads guidelines" and affected infringements were withdrawn and refunded.
There is a Road Safety Camera Commissioner who investigates complaints:

That doesnt make sense.
You're driving along at 80, light turns amber 15m in front of you, you cant stop in time so you get a fine?
That isn't how it works.
Maybe you were stopped and took off to go through an amber light, that is completely different.
Sorry boccos said it better than i did.
You cannot run a yellow light unless you have to because it is unsafe to stop ie the person behind will slam into you if you stop upruptly.
Im not a speed demon so i definitely was not speeding.
I usually slow down at an intersection now because i dont want to run a yellow again.
Im in NSW so not sure if other states have diff rules.

That is only part of it.
If it turns amber and you are not going to stop by the line/intersection then you continue to cross. It doesn't matter if you are the only car on the road. If it turns amber and you have time to stop (and it is safe to do so) then stop.
It is perfectly legal to go through an amber light if you cant stop in time.
The rules are that you should treat the yellow light as a red light and stop. But if it means stopping when it is unsafe to do so, like when the yellow light appears when your position is too close to the intersection so that if a stop was attempted it would cause you to stop somewhere inside the intersection, then this is considered to be unsafe. You should then proceed through for safety reasons. Police have been advised to issue warnings and fines in an attempt to change the popular public habit of speeding up to get through the intersection before the light turns red.
IT HAS BEEN THE LAW FOR A VERY LONG TIME. Its just that most of us have have chosen to interpret it erroneously.
The photo on the yellow acts as a `double check' - if there is also a vehicle passing through on the red, there will be a clear indication as to whether it did because of safety reasons [e.g. someone right on their tail] or just because it could.

You must stop at a yellow light light. It is just like a red light, you may only proceed if it will cause an accident to stop abruptly.
Huh? Your own link disagrees with you.
First point is if you can stop behind the line. Subsequent to stopping in time is the consideration of causing an accident (a truck tailgating you for instance).
Maybe this has been mentioned already but I will chuck the info in.
So here in NSW they have made some (not all) lights into safety lights, they won't just check if you have gone through a red but also if you try and run a yellow.
I need to track down the rule but even if you pass the line while the light is yellow you can still be fined if the car has not crossed completely over the stop line by the time the lights go red. This also catches people speeding up to run the yellow before they go red.
Let me see if I can find the ruling on it.
** Edit **
Found the fines list, on page 1 under the traffic control lights section there are a few fines about yellow lights.

And this one on page 15

Red-light speed cameras won't detect a non-speeding vehicle driving through on yellow. They are a 24hr speed camera and a red-light camera. The red-light function only activates after the light has turned red.
UPDATE! Did not receive a fine.
if you truly did, then no you won't be fined afaik.
has happened to me multiple times.
