Telstra T-BOX. Telstra removing media streaming function without permission

In a recent upgrade to the firmware of the Telstra T-Box the media streaming functionality has been moved into a sub-menu which is only accessible by registered T-Box users.

This means that those of us who have purchased our T-Boxes outright and are no longer using the BigPond network have lost functionality on our device.

I don't know what gives Telstra the right to alter a device that I own without my permission?

Obviously there are others who have suffered at the hands of Telstra as there is now a petition going

https://www.change.org/petitions/telstra-make-my-media-avail…

Anyone had any luck getting this fixed ??

How did they change your software if you weren't connected to Telstra ?

(wonder if someone can upload the old version for users)

    • They have a phone home capability, my parents T box did updates at seemingly random times and sometimes even downgraded itself only to update itself again.

  • Media Streaming is still there you have to go to applications to get to it now.

EDITsorry didn't read your comment properly jumped the gun.

  • From reading the petition it sounds as though Telstra added this functionality recently so it wasn't there when you purchased it.

Based upon that fact I'd think you'd have next to zero chance of getting it back through outrage. It'd be down to Telstra deciding whether it wanted to give its customers the best experience so in summary: you're kinda screwed.

    Good luck though.

    • It has been a feature for quite a while the device is essentially a re-branded media device from a company that sells them to companies like Telstra to sell onto consumers, my parents have one and it has been a feature for at least a year maybe two.
EDIT: Netgem is the company that makes them.

  • Telstra have the right to alter the device without permission. It still works as intended, and the minimum requirements to run it were known to you when you purchased it outright. You are using the term purchased outright differently to how they used the term purchased outright. https://www.telstra.com.au/help/download/document/personal-c…
It does suck but the risk was always there.

    • yeah this sentence pretty much sums it up…

When your T-Box is not registered or connected to a BigPond Broadband service, features will be limited to free-to-air digital channels, basic TV program guide (programs on now and next only) and basic recording features such as manual timed recordings.

  • It's going to be interesting to see how the TIO looks at it. Telstra have refused to re-instate MyMedia and have been advised of the TIO complaint. Off to the umpire. Hope the Telstra Shareholders are happy. i'm sure taking the MyMedia function off me is going to save them millions!

  • Matter is now resolved. Telstra have offered to refund me my early termination fee for the T-Box (approx $235) I have accepted there offer and am off to buy a new PVR/DLNA box (probably a Humax 7500T :-) Happy camper !!
